The Least Important Meal of the Day

Dinner Americans have their dietary days backwards. I’ve known this intellectually for years but on a deeply ingrained cultural and social level I’m still working hard to know this in my heart. We save the biggest meal, the one with the most calories, for the end of the day. We’re Read more →

The Idea that Started it All

When you’re working on a story concept one of the most important things to keep in mind is that nothing is sacred. You have to be willing to let the story goes where it will. This means, in some cases, eliminating the very idea that started it all. I’ve both Read more →

Print or E-ARCs?

I can't imagine being a book blogger without owning an e-reader these days. With such a cheap medium to provide advanced review copies, ebooks are a the promotion tool of choice for many publishers and authors. Both here and on Net Galley, where I get most of my ARCs, it's in electronic format. From the flipside: As an author, I try to have a few print books available for reviewers who still insist upon that format, but I'll give you the straight numbers -- each book costs me $10 + shipping. Characters Welcome

Since I know there are a lot of authors who frequent this site, I wanted to tell you about an on-line workshop I'm hosting starting next week at Savvy Authors. It's a character-building workshop with a new twist -- you come in character. You'll have the opportunity to post as if you are your character, while others ask you questions that should help you add depth and breadth. There's even a live chat option. I'm hoping this workshop will be of benefit to beginning, intermediate, or advanced…See More

What is YA?

First, let me ask: Have you heard of a classification called new adult? It's a sort of crossover classification between YA and adult in which the characters are in their early 20's (college age). There is some theoretical appeal for both teens and adults. Many adults are now reading YA, but new adult may have more adult situations/themes.  I have an urban fantasy series coming out soon that is clearly new adult, but since very few people have heard of it, finding my target market has been a…See More

Leaving a review when a book just isn't for you....

As a reviewer, I freely distinguish between two types of books:1. Those I think are poor examples of their type (which I usually enjoy)2. Those that, for one reason or another, are just not my type of book.I do not review the second category. If it's just not my thing, then why should I weigh in?It is sometimes difficult to identify book that just aren't my thing. We are often obsessed with genre labels, but I have enjoyed books in nearly every genre you can name. I've also hated books in…See More

Hello, Christine!

He is considered the most innovative of the Brazilian modernists. Besides having been a precursor of the Tropicália movement and of the "marginal poetry" of the 70s, de Andrade wrote three major manifestos: the Pau-Brasil Poetry Manifesto (1924), Pau Brasil (1925) and the Anthropophagic Manifesto (1928). He also introduced Brazilian literature to experimental prose with Memórias Sentimentais de João Miramar (1924).Visit me plase: http://nelsonsouzza.blogspot.com/2011/07/memorias-sentimentais-de-joao-miramar.html
