The Optimist by Dwight Estava

For the great author-satirist Kurt Vonnegut, both laughter and tears are at turns responses to frustration and exhaustion. Howbeit, satirically speaking, he prefers laughing over crying as there is less cleaning up to do afterwards. In The Optimist, author Dwight Estava recounts an impressively-spun fictional tale that echoes Vonnegut’s take on optimism, and writes with spontaneity and certain forcefulness, one that is akin to Jack Kerouac’s writing style.Callum Eden is a hotshot financial…See More

About Me:
We each experience a lot of changes to our minds and bodies as we grow up, especially when we reach puberty. When I was about ten, I had the unexplainable urge to define my emotions. My brother, Earl, was nineteen and it was fair to say he understood his emotions perfectly. He had a passion for writing poetry and was a bit of a ladies’ man. I was convinced that his poetry was the source for his magnetic influence on women.

In a moment of ingenuity, I ‘borrowed’ one of his poems and decided to give it to the most popular ‘A’-grade girl in my class. This girl was responsible for my initial curiosity with my emotions. I was smug and hopeful that the result would be a life-changing experience. What I didn’t take into account was that if she didn’t understand what was written then it was unlikely she would believe that I wrote it.

Children can be unsurprisingly cruel and so embarrassment was the first real experience I had to associate with my emotions. Suffice to say, it was one form of emotion I desperately wanted to disassociate myself with. I replaced it with rage and made it my personal mission for it to never be repeated.

Subsequently, my mind convinced my hand to get a pen and start abusing the paper with my thoughts, and I got pretty good it. I discovered that writing was no longer my nemesis but my alliance. There was a noticeable change in my writing abilities; I became a fan of my own work. I liked how the words made me feel. In school, I came to love English literature; studying the history of English language widened my perspective. I learned that words are a powerful tool to have at your disposal.

As my pen continued to attract paper, words flowed harmoniously creating a series of poems; as a result, came the birth of my first self-published book entitled ‘A Perception of Love’.

‘The Optimist’, my newest book, represents a change. I wanted to challenge myself in the art of creative writing and to take on the task of becoming a novelist. I hope you enjoy reading it as much I have enjoyed writing it.
