About Me:
Windy city writer, Elizabeth Marx, brings cosmopolitan life alive in her fiction—a blend of romance, fast-paced Chicago living, and a sprinkle of magical realism. Elizabeth resides with her husband, girls, and two cats who’ve spelled everyone into believing they’re really dogs. She grew up in the city, has traveled extensively, and still says there’s no town like Chi town.

You're welcome Elizabeth

Well you're on your way to being free on Amazon! It takes awhile but it does happen, a couple of weeks with the novel, it is now finally free and going like hotcakes. I have told them about the short stories and am still waiting for it to go free.

Have a great Christmas, I have been 'elfing' as well and we have a five year old who is counting the minutes!

Cheers

Julie

Hi Elizabeth

Welcome to book blogs. The key to getting books free on Amazon is through Smashwords. You can choose to make books free on Smashwords and eventually that will filter through to the other sites, B & N, Apple, Sony etc. When that happens go to the feature on your Amazon page that allows you to let them know of a cheaper price. They don't care about Smashwords, but they do care about the others, so if you let them know (cut and paste url) about Apple, Sony etc....eventually they will change the Amazon price to free. But sometimes, not for long.

I have 3 books on Amazon and Smashwords. My short stories and Dad's war letters have always been free on Smashwords, 99cents on Amazon. Late November Dad's letters went free on Amazon and have had around 4000 downloads on Amazon to date. By contrast 330 on SW in the same time frame. My novel went free on SW same day and has had 103 downloads. Amazon made it free for about four hours and the downloads shot up, but after it was put back to 99cents, it has continued to sell well. The key is to get on the rankings at Amazon, people buy off the rankings list.

No, my books are not companions to each other, although the short stories does contain a similar story to the novel. I have googled forums with interest in the subjects, lots of WWII forums in my case, and posted there - you need to join in discussion, not just promote. Follow people on twitter who tweet about book sites that promote. Search Amazon for threads you can join in the discussion. Authors Den is good, Good Reads is great, Book Barista allows you to feature books on home page for free, Your Books is a good site, so is Bestseller Bound. You will find all these on Google. Hope all this helps. Good luck! I will have my next novel up around Feb.

Cheers

Julie

I am convinced, Elizabeth, it was a computer error. And if it wasn't, no matter, because I put the book up for free for the first month - about 95% of those downloads. I have slunk steadily since then. Still #31 if you search for "Rome" by popularity in Kindle books.

Yes, the reviews are key, I think, plus working the blog circuit. I see you have a few 5-star reviews yourself. I truly do not have enough time to write (day job, family). Anyway, assuming those downloads are authentic, I am very happy, as I'm sure you are, to be published at long last. I went the brick & mortar route years ago and got thoroughly spanked. How do you keep organized with spreadsheets? What about paperback? Ya gotta love digital printing. Although another friend just told me her books sell 5 to 1, Kindle vs. paperback. On the other hand, with the 2 sales I made yesterday, I made more than all of the last two months! Good luck, fellow warrior of the written word!
