I was trying to follow you but couldn't find the link. Let me know. Liz

they take a cut...ouch

Editing, for one. A good agent (which means you must have the sense to identify not so good agents) can edit a book so that you tell not just a story but an interesting, well-organized and powerful story. This is the main reason I value agents. But, if you already know a great editor who loves working with you then ignore that point. Business advice, an agent knows the business more than I do and if you are looking at a hopefully looooong career (maybe with a movie to follow) you may need good advice someday. Larger print runs, many writers find small publishing houses and then end up with tiny print runs (which if you are going into the e-book business this doesn't matter so much), but if you still dream of having your hard copy book in bookstores then a large print run--from a bigger publisher--helps. Playing all the markets, I'm not against e-books, I love 'em. But having at least one book in the book stores, as opposed to all on Amazon, simply expands your market. So there you go...an agent can help. (smiley-face)

Why would you want an agent? Why...why...why...I'm starting to wonder myself.

Hi! Welcome to Book Blogs—if you are in the oftentimes horrific proposal / query letter process and are hunting for that elusive agent OR… if you have advice for newbies then join me at The Agent Challenge and leave me a comment. Also, I’m giving away the 2012 big book of agents or a book from one of our mentors. Drawing from followers at the end of December!
