The Zen of Cinnamon Bagels

Yesterday I had a craving for cinnamon bagels.

I went to the shop on the way home from work, hoping to buy some for breakfast. I thought about the smell of toasting bagels. I thought about the melted butter dripping onto my fingers.

I got to the bread section. I scanned the shelves. French stick. Croissants. Malted brown rolls. Where are my bagels? MY bagels - I WANT bagels. I should HAVE them.

No bagels.

After a strong 'gah' feeling, I recovered my… Continue

PJ Harvey and funny faces

I saw PJ Harvey perform at Bestival a couple of weekends ago. I'm a big fan of her music, and it was such a privelige to watch and listen to her sing her favourite songs solo as she played various instruments to accompany herself.

She gave herself utterly to the performance. Her voice was exquisite, but she played the songs with her whole body. It was more like channeling. You could see the joy and the pain around her like a halo.

It reminded me of the classical musicians… Continue

Sometimes I think I must be mad

I have chosen several threads to run through my life.

I am a therapist. I am a writer. I am interested in Zen Buddhism. I grow things.

Sometimes I think I must be mad.

I have a private practice - I'm on my own. There's no sick or holiday pay, and sometimes I don't have enough clients. The work is hard - it's always challenging me. I've written for more than a decade, and have had more than a decade of rejections and self-doubt. It's hard work. I'm on my own. I… Continue

There must be easier ways to make a living...

I went shopping for books yesterday. I had an hour between clients. I fancied a browse.

After half an hour I picked up a book I'd never heard of, 'When You're Falling, Dive'. Then I happened upon a book I'd heard of online - I've 'met' the author, and it had appealed to me. It was the last copy and it was a bit battered, but I added it to my pile.

They were both wearing three-for-two stickers, so I just needed to find my third book. I looked for Susie Orbach's Bodies,… Continue

Dear Book Lover:

I am the national bestselling, award winning author of six critically acclaimed novels. Twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction.

On Jan 9th, 2010 my debut novel, SUGAR will celebrate its 10th anniversary and in order to commemorate this milestone I am campaigning to sell 10,000 copies between now and that date.

“Bernice L. McFadden's first novel begins with the brief, poetic description of a crime so startling that the reader is helplessly drawn in, as if a bright red door stood ajar on a bleak and forbidding house. Pearl Taylor's daughter, Jude, has been found murdered and mutilated near a field at the edge of town. "The murder had white man written all over it," writes McFadden. "But no one would say it above a whisper. It was 1940. It was Bigelow, Arkansas. It was a black child. Need any more be said?" In the years that follow, Pearl catches sight of Jude in so many strangers that when Sugar Lacey comes to town and sets up her unwholesome "business" in the house next door, she doesn't know whether to believe what she sees in Sugar's face: a striking similarity to Jude, dead 15 years. In her sedate but supple prose--rising at times to a light, unforced lyricism in the description of landscape or character--the author perfectly renders the closed and protective society of a small Southern town, the superstitions, gossip, and prying.”

I’m asking that you purchase a copy of SUGAR for yourself, a friend or family member. Yes, KINDLE purchases count!

And if you could help spread the word by blogging, twittering ad Face-booking my campaign, it would mean the world to me.

Peace & Light,

Bernice L. McFadden

Hi Fiona

I own a website called favaholic - a compilation of famous people and their favorite books. Would you be interested in exchanging links to add to each other's blogroll? I think it would help both of our search engine rankings. Please let me know!

(And if you found my messaging a nuisance, also please let me know. I don't want to be a pest around here. Thanks!)
