Lesser Love for Jane

This is awkward. In the past, online and in person with fellow lesbreaders, I've had attaladys and gold stars galore for Melissa Bank's The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing. The upshot of my hallelujah refrain was, as I remember (it's been a while), that it made a perfect palate-cleanser book, one that managed lighthearted without sinking into the bastardized low of brainless and sappy. It was this description I had…See More

Mamas, Don't Let Your Frat Boys Grow Up to be Bonds Traders

Tom Wolfe wrote The Bonfire of the Vanities quite a few years before I Am Charlotte Simmons, so my experience reading them in reverse order isn't technically chronological, of course. However, as I recently completed my painstaking for-pride-and-pride-alone reading of Bonfire, I kept coming back to the impression of chronology, and it didn't…See More

Profile Information

Favorite Book
Charms for the Easy Life by Kaye Gibbons
About Me:
I write reviews for Kirkus Indie, a subdivision of Kirkus Reviews. Author interviews (authors including the beautiful, smart, southern Minrose Gwin and the beautiful, smart, Russian Elena Gorokhova) and book reviews for Her Circle Ezine. Write, proof, and rearrange copy for Gander Mountain Direct Marketing.

I write fiction. The short of it has appeared in Sotto Voce Magazine (where I went on to assist on the editorial team - reading, ranking submissions; providing commentary; recommending stand-outs for publication), Dark Sky Magazine, Writers' Bloc, and Pif Magazine. And in a now-unoffered magazine known as Diet Soap. Memorably, in Diet Soap. As they published my short story about a girl who nearly sleeps with her father's lawyer-friend following a murder trial as .... memoir.

In the chaotic tidbits department: I placed as a quarter-finalist in Creative Screenwriting's Open contest in Los Angeles. I wrote obituaries for the newspaper at one point. At the same point, I edited the sports writer's Sunday racing column, in all likelihood morphing his critical assessements into word-swarms which would make nil sense to anyone actually familiar with racing, but which sounded better to me on a stylistic plane.

My favorite writers are Andrew Miller, Iris Murdoch, Flannery O'Connor, and Kaye Gibbons. My favorite world-class genius and evolutionary heroine who happened to also write is Ayn Rand. I continually brush up on and find nothing but barebones, lovely logic in her philosophy: Objectivism.

I'm the mother of a three-year-old who has her own patent, sorta ascerbic sense of humor already. I eat like a caveman. I don't tend to sleep, but, when I do, lean toward lucid dreams in which I take creative god-like licenses such as planting plastic figurines in fish tanks with my mind. I'm a little surprised, given the history of my intensity, that any given object I stare at for more than five consecutive seconds doesn't burst into flames. 5+ flannel shirts, and increasing. Lesbian. Men's college basketball admirer.

Hannah,

It's an overwhelming place at times. I still find myself wary of discussion boards. So many people post so much so fast that I'm totally overwhelmed. I tend to stick to 'direct' contact. Feel free to ask questions here or in email. And no worries at all about when you get back to me. I find it irrelevant here, for some reason. The rules of timely exchange just don't matter as long as there are wonderful blogs to read and interesting people to meet.

Cheers,

E

Great about me! I love the tempo and what you choose to reveal. Welcome to BB...though I see you've been here over a month. May I say thank you for proclaiming up front there are spoilers in your review! I'm not a big fan of spoilers but I understand that when writing a thoughtful review, it can be necessary. I think it's very professional to announce up front. Not that that sort of professionalism is shocking given your background.

I hope you'll visit me at www.mymotherstuttered.blogspot.com. I'm nearing the publication of my novel Strong Enough.

Cheers,

Ellen
