If you are a vociferous reader, you probably read some books that you don't choose to blog about. How do you cull the wheat from the chaff when it comes to blogging? And, more to the point, how do…Continue

I have read two outstanding "small" books, meaning that the size as well as the content of the book was much smaller than usual. The first of these was The Clothes They Stood Up In by Alan Bennett.…Continue

One Story - Non-Profit Magazine Designed to Save the Short Story

Anyone who is interested in short stories should check out One Story, a non-profit magazine that's purpose is to bring short stories to readers in a format that fits into our lives. I've written a blog that gives full information about this little magazine, but a few of the highlights include: a single story mailed to you (or available on Kindle) every three weeks;a reader-friendly format that makes it easy to carry the story along with you;a policy to publish any author only once, giving…See More

How Do You Find Your Next Book?

If you are a vociferous reader, you probably read some books that you don't choose to blog about. How do you cull the wheat from the chaff when it comes to blogging? And, more to the point, how do you maintain your momentum when you've read a really great book? I've just discovered a helpful referral site - The Book Seer - that helps you use the title/author of a favorite book to find similar books. I've written a review of the site on my own blog,…See More

How Do You Review Short Stories/Collections

I love to read short stories, and always have a collection of short stories or essays going, in addition to whatever else I may be reading. However, I find reviewing them to be a challenge. Do you review individual stories? Wait until you finish a collection and review the collection as a whole? I've tried it both ways - there seem to be pros and cons either way. If you have a chance, please take a look at my short…See More

Have You Seen This Book?

About two months ago The New York Times Book Review reviewed a book I've been trying to find. Unfortunately, I lost the review and no longer remember the title or author of the book. What I do know is thatthe author is Russian or Ukranian - I believe a woman;the book is a collection of folk or fairy tales similar in style to The Brothers Grimm (dark stories with a moral);this is not a reprinting or retelling of classic tales - these are new stories. If you know this book, I would really love to…See More

Small Books

I have read two outstanding "small" books, meaning that the size as well as the content of the book was much smaller than usual. The first of these was The Clothes They Stood Up In by Alan Bennett. This dead-on satire tells of a married couple who return home from the opera to find that all - really, all - of their belongings have been stolen. What ensues is a look at what happens when they are freed of all material possessions. Barely 100 pages, measuring about 4" x 6", this book is not only…See More

Free Books on Kindle

The New York Times has an interesting article today (Jan 23) regarding free books available on Kindle and other e-books. This, of course, is a controversial practice. Large publishing houses fear it will drive down the price of books, but independent authors and smaller publishers find it a successful way to introduce readers to writers whose work might get buried under the "big names" (think James Patterson and…See More

Help! Stuck Between Books!

I am experiencing a weird phenomenom that sometimes occurs for me. I'm stuck between books and seem to be unable to really read either one. Here's what's happening... I received, and began to read, Wolf Hall for Christmas. Love it, but it's very long. I wasn't able to finish. In the meantime, I'm coming up on the deadline for my January Book Club meeting. Our book is The Year of the Flood. Frankly, I would be hard pressed to find two more different books, but both are great reads.Wolf Hall…See More

Keeping Track of TBR Titles

I've just posted this question on my blog, but would love input from those of you who subscribe to this Ning:I think many of us come across more intriguing book titles than we can actually get around to reading. In fact, this is sort of the impetus for my blog title - Too Many Books, Too Little Time! I've been struggling with this lately - how to keep track of the interesting titles that I want to read and not have them lost due to my poor memory.I've been considering a few options:- Getting a…See More

Hi Jeanie,

Your husband is from Forest Hills, NY. I went to Molly H.S, The fairly laid back Marist Brothers Catholic school after I found the Jesuits of Xavier too much for me to handle.

Hey - thanks for the comment on blog layouts. Your layout IS clean and easy to read. I liked your post about Conroy's Beach Music, also. I will confess to slightly enjoying that book, however, the one word that always comes to mind when I think of that book is "overwrought."

Cheers,
Greg
