That Other Juana (Queen Juana I of Spain) Juana la LocaJuana founded the Hapsburg dynasties of Spain and Austria but her life was ruined by three men: her husband a blatant womaniser and political schemer; her father who betrayed and isolated her; and her son who imprisoned her for a further thirty years. eBooks: a boon to readers and self publishers

The speed at which the sales of Kindle and other digital ebooks have taken off has been quite spectacular. Amazon online sales of digital books are now greater than sales of all other printed book forms. My own Kindle Books are already outselling the paperbacks by more than 4 to 1. With the recent launch of Google eBooks this trend may well accelerate. Now the ease of self-publishing in digital form makes it possible for anyone to publish and make their work available to the wider public as…See More

Reigns in Spain

Spanish history and Spanish royals as the subject for historical fiction can make for very entertaining and interesting reading and provide a real change.Intriguing characters and fascinating stories abound: Juana la Loca (Joan the Mad) who was imprisoned for most of her life by her family and denied her rightful claim to the Spanish throne; the outrageously ill-tempered Emperor Charles V who ruled most of Europe - badly - and whose only solace was in memories of Barbara; Philip II who grossly…See More

Had enough Tudor historical fiction?

If you’ve had enough of historical fiction based on Tudor England and need a change perhaps A Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy would be just the thing. When English author Linda Carlino first began visiting Spain she had no idea that years later she was going to write historical novels about Spanish royals. But that’s exactly what she did. She wrote three novels about the most important descendents of Ferdinand and Isabella. The books of the trilogy are connected (mother, son, grandson) but each book can…See More

Tour of Spain leads to foreign publishing contracts Portuguese and Brazilian publishing contracts were never dreamed of when the author Linda Carlino first visited Spain in 1988. Her five week independent tour, which included Palencia, Burgos, Madrid, Toledo, Aranjuez, Cuenca, Cordoba, Granada, Seville, Cadiz, Avila, Salamanca and Valladolid, was a life-changing event. She was hooked. She wanted to know more, much more. She studied Spanish and then started reading Spanish sources. Fascinated…See More

Author hooked on Spain after first visit

Summary:Touring Spain for five weeks was a life changing experience for Linda Carlino. It was her first visit to Spain and she became fascinated with its history and led directly to a successful second career as a writer of historical novels. The author Linda Carlino made her first visit to Spain during the summer of 1988. It wasn’t her choice, it was her husbands. She didn’t speak any Spanish and knew little of Spain and its history apart from what she had read in H. V. Morton’s travel book, A…See More

Looking for Something New in Historical Fiction?

A Matter of Pride by Linda Carlino is very funny and also at times, very sad.In 1557 a prematurely aged, ill, and very irritable and grumpy Emperor Charles V retires to a small secluded monastery in southwest Spain. He suffers from painful chronic gout, crippling arthritis and excruciatingly painful piles. He has to be carried around in a chair and continually washed and pampered with vinegar bandages.Sounds like fun? It gets better! He has lost most of his teeth and the sight of him eating was…See More

Looking for some different historical fiction?

How about the story of Juana la Loca, (Joan the Mad) That Other Juana by Linda Carlino - beautifully written, compelling and unforgettable. Writers, dramatists filmmakers and even historians have distorted and sensationalised the story of Juana’s life for their own ends. She wasn’t a nymphomaniac, she didn’t murder her husband, she didn’t have his coffin reopened repeatedly, nor did she trail all over Spain with his remains. In fact her real story is more outrageous than any of the…See More

eBook Revolution

Digital eBooks sales are increasing dramatically and publishers, big and small, are having to adapt to the dramatic changes in their industry. For many millions of readers books are, and always will be, the favoured way of reading and hopefully hard backs and paperbacks will never be completely replaced by digital forms. But nothing less than a revolution is taking place in the publishing industry at a speed that few could have predicted, and it may well accelerate. The world of books and…See More

Profile Information

About Me:
I have had a lifelong passion for history and historical fiction. When I visited Spain for the first time twenty years ago I became fascinated with its XV and XVI century history and its many historical connections with England. Since then I have travelled extensively in Spain and studied for long periods in many of its most prestigious public and private libraries. My research then became concentrated on the descendents of Ferdinand and Isabel: Juana, her son Charles and her grandson Philip.
In August 2007 VeritasPublishing published my debut historical novel That Other Juana (Juana la Loca - sister of Catherine of Aragon). My second novel about Juana’s son, A Matter of Pride (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor) was published in 2008 and Wives & Other Women about her grandson (Philip II of Spain, husband of Mary Tudor and notorious for the Armada) in late 2008, thus completing my Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy.
In October 2009 That Other Juana was published worldwide in Portuguese by Editorial Presença. In early 2010 it bought the other two books of the trilogy - A Matter of Pride and Wives & Other Women and will publish them in Portuguese during 2010-2011.
All three books, in English, are available from amazon.com and amazon.co.uk
