About Me:
Award-winning author Linda Hubalek tells us how she ended up writing books about Kansas pioneer women.

In sixth grade we had to write a paper on what we wanted to do when we grew up. My mom had kept it and I found this paper while cleaning through my closet during my college days. According to my dreams back then, I wanted to be a farmer, but my last line was – “but alas, girls can't be farmers.”

Well, I got my Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture/Horticulture from Kansas State University, did agronomy research for years before starting a wholesale horticulture business. My company, Prairie Flower Creations, grew and dried flowers, ornamental corn, and mini pumpkins for the florist trade.

In 1990 I was featured in Country Woman Magazine, but at the same time, my husband's job was transferred to California. I sold my business and tried to cope, growing flowers and pumpkins in five-gallon buckets on our cement lawn.

I started writing about the family and farmland I was homesick for and started a new career, writing about women ancestors who had moved to the new state of Kansas and farmed its land.

We eventually moved back to Kansas, bought land next to my family, raised buffalo, and I have a garden again. So not only have I fulfilled my dream to be a farmer, I've written about past and present women that have also tilled the prairie land of Kansas.

Please read and enjoy my book series which are about the family that homestead our family farm, and my ancestors that homesteaded in Kansas in the 1800s.

My writing time most days is working on the next book series.

I recently went through old photos of our family homestead to find new photos to revamp my book covers. (It’s been twenty years since I wrote Butter in the Well, my first book…so I thought it was time for updates.) Because…

Yellow Iris guarding the Cemetery

Our early and mild spring weather has given us beautiful flowers this year. My back patio is a fragrant experience with roses and iris blooming right now.

When my yellow iris shows it first bloom, I think of the old cemetery that is on the top hill of one of our family’s pasture. There hasn’t been anyone buried there for decades, but years ago someone planted…

Plastering Dugout Walls

We’re in the process of building our own house, doing almost all of the work ourselves. This week I’ve been pounding in nails on wall edging, and taping and mudding sheet rock. My finger joints and wrists feel like they could break off as they are so tired and sore.

But then I think of this diary entry from Butter in the Well

April 25,…

Pretty much all of the books I've done with ACX have taken right at 3 weeks from the time I hit DONE until it gets published on the site, give or take a day.  They do a pretty rigorous quality check on them, so that seems reasonable to me.

I'm just starting to get into the promo thing myself.  I have my own website where I add new releases, samples, and links for the books.  I also have a blog there.  I post on goodreads and now here, facebook, twitter.  I also have a small email list I send updates out to periodically.

I am testing out a giveaway right now.  It just started two days ago and has greatly increased the hits on my blog page.  I'll let you know how it turns out.

From what I've been told by other producers/authors, the best promotion is reviews.  So definitely get your promo codes from Audible and get them to as many reviewers (ones you know will actually post the review) as possible.  For the audiobooks, ask them to post on audible.com.  Audible members really rely on those when choosing new books to listen to.

Linda,

I lived in Wichita from second grade to high school, then moved to August.  My husband is from El Dorado.  Not too far from you!  We still have relatives in Wichita and El Dorado.  We drive by Lindsborg every time we go back to visit.

ACX has really done a great job of getting authors/publshers and narrators together.  I am a narrator for them and have been booked solid since last March.  You can search for me in the narrators search option.

I will contract by finished hour or by royalty share if I believe in the book and the author's/publisher's commitment to promote it.  I also do my best to promote the audiobooks, but am still a little new at how it all works.  Learning pretty quickly, though.

Good to talk to a fellow Kansan!

Karen

Hi Linda,

Thanks so much for the welcome!  I grew up in Kansas - near Wichita.

I am a narrator and have several audiobooks that are available for retail.  I have samples on my website http://www.justsayinvo.com/audio-books.html.

I've joined this site to network with authors and reviewers and promote my books.  I would like to start doing reviews as well, but I think that will be down the road awhile.

I will. I will wait until my friend finishes the 3 books she is reading now about the Indians that her distant cousin sent us to read and blog about. I don't want to get too overwhelmed on history books since they are definitely more intense than my books I read. I would hate to mess someone's research up and they deserve my full attention.
