Hey Rachel, wasn't sure if you would be notified that I replied to your reply (whew.  things can get a little convoluted here).  But I wanted to thank you again and copy my message here:

Thanks for the comment Rachel.  My biggest difficulty with The Road (besides the lack of punctuation) was, as a horror writer, I kept waiting for the details (and really wanting to know) of how everything went down to bring the world to this state.  It took me a little while to realize that, much as I wanted to know, that's not what the book was about.

Oh, and p.s.- someone else told me about Phantom Tollbooth as very influential book when they responded to my post "My own Works Cited: 10 books that have inspired me."  Yet another reason for me to check it out.
