"The only thing we require to be good philosophers is the faculty of wonder"

Sophie’s story, aside from being a scan through different Ages of Thought, very cleverly intertwines a mysterious intrigue that was part of the reason I managed to read through huge chunks of the book without coming up for air, massively saturated in knowledge as it was. The intrigue relates to what Sophie is learning about herself and the world, and what a certain girl, Hilde, is learning through Sophie’s discussions with her philosopher mentor, Alberto Knox. All these strange occurences…See More

To eat or not to eat the children!

Midwife turned sorceress, the Ugly One, as the villagers call her, spends her life trying to heal others, trying to give her daughter a life of beauty and love that she never had herself. But, in order to heal, she must make a magic circle of protection and face the demons that bring sickness and misery. It's hard not to just lay down in the sand and let the dunes absorb you when the story's so good!

Water. Every droplet of moisture condensed from a living breath, collected from the morning dew, reabsorbed from the skin and distilled from the blood of the dead, every bit of it is precious on the planet Arrakis, a planet of rock, sand and melange. When Paul and his family were relocated to this land, they were fat with water and unused to the ways of the desert people, the Fremens. Paul's father, the Duke Leto, had a plan to use the wealth of the planet, the greatly coveted spice melange,…

What does it mean to walk the dream of dragons?

Cat could always see, hear and smell down the threads of magic that make up the spirit world, the fabric of life that sustains the physical world around her. Living under the care of her Aunt and Uncle and cousins of the Hassi Barahal clan, she remembers clearly, her mother saying one thing to her before she died: Don't tell anyone what you can do or see, Cat. Tell no one. Not ever. Except for her best friend and cousin Bee, Cat never had more than a lingering curiosity about her ability. It…

Drama with extra fur and fangs

Kalix MacRinnalch is a lonely girl even when she was surrounded by family. She doesn't understand them and they dont even try to understand her. There's her arrogant, throat-grabbing, bully of a brother Sarapen with his paws set on the thaneship and a death threat on her head. Her other brother, the elegant mama's boy Markus, couldn't care less about his sullen younger sister except by throwing a few threats her way, too. There's her sister Thrix, the Enchantress, too busy making a living…

If you named yourself Maximum Ride, you better be prepared for something like that!

Humans and animals - what's with our overwhelming desire to transcend the inter-species boundary and see what we get? A pig-snake? A snake-pig? An unethical mess?

Max Ride and her crew are scientific success stories. With a retractable package of wings, hawk vision and other powers, they could pretty much go and do whatever they like. But the baby-stealing mad scientists of the book would rather shock them to test their reaction time, run them to exhaustion to test their stamina…
