The Power of a Group

At the ripe old age of 42 I’ve learned something about myself. I like to be part of a group. Perhaps I’ve always known it, but the last several years it seems to more and more prevalent in my life.I had no idea until several years ago that I liked group exercise. Not particularly athletic, I always assumed it was best to exercise away from people. Y’know, so no one can see the extra pudge that hangs over your spandex. But several years ago I decided to try a group class and found I loved it. I…See More

The Kindness of Friends

In his masterpiece, Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee William's character Blanche says she's always relied on the kindness of strangers. I've alway relied on the kindness of friends. All my life I've been blessed in this way. What I've lacked in beauty, talent and monetary wealth has been overshadowed by the quality of my friendships; indeed the quality of the people I've met along this path of life . These friends dwell all over the world and thanks to Facebook I've found many I thought were…See More

Shake Your Fist Into the Wind

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. Ralph Waldo EmersonI went into the hospital to have Ella an ordinary woman. I came out the next day bigger, bolder, my heart expanded with intense love for this baby girl I held in my arms. But there was another thing there. An unwelcome guest that comes with the love.Guilt.It's here for good; is present in every minute of every day. I can’t get away from it, that gnawing sense that I’ve done something damaging to…See More

A Mother's Instinct

I don’t have medical training of any kind. I am only a mom. But I can diagnose most any ailment my children have.My youngest daughter, Emerson, who turned 5 a week ago, received a fever and cold for a belated birthday present.  It started last Wednesday during breakfast when she crumpled into a tear soaked meltdown over nothing, which my easy-going child never does. I felt her forehead. Without even pulling out the thermometer, I knew it was a fever. We stayed in from school and other…See More

For the Love of Another

When I was young I had a special friend named Erik. He was a boy friend, not a boyfriend, but I loved him like family. The first time I ever met him, we were eleven years old and he was riding around our town lake on his bicycle, his wiry tanned legs pushing the pedals through the Oregon dust with a ferocity I learned was characteristic to his life approach. He was a scrappy talented kid who could draw and paint as well as dance every Michael Jackson step as well as the King of Pop himself. Now,…See More

Peach Hued Memory

A friend from childhood posted my second grade school photo today on Facebook.I remember the dress I’m wearing like it was yesterday.  Although it looks pink in the photo, it was actually gradations of peach with ivory hued lace in five-inch spaces all down the dress. It was brought to me in the dry heat of an Oregon August by my grandmother.  My grandparents drove to our home…See More

Scars of the Heart

My husband and I decided to downsize last summer so that I could continue to write without having to go back to a real job.  We were lucky enough to sell our other home and find a new construction town-home in a wonderful community. The problem with this new home?  I feel keenly every dent, scratch and blemish in what only seven months ago was flawless.  I can’t go a day without seeing a new scar on the…See More

The Magic of Brunch

This morning around ten a.m I walked home from the gym with my five-year-old, our first Friday without school. She skipped, zigzagging, avoiding the cracks in the sidewalk representing hot lava, happy in her childhood game. I was in the moment, for once, instead of thinking about the plot of my latest novel or worrying about something I had to do when I got home. She looked up at me, light blue eyes, yellow ponytail, lean legs in shorts even though it is still in the 50's here in western…

Gratitude Challenge

This has been a day of several major frustrations, which I won't go into on this blog, but suffice it to say have me agitated. Maybe you have as well? Or maybe not. Some days you're the windshield and some days the bug, right?

But it reminded me of something I've been thinking about a lot lately. How much does gratitude play into the course of our lives? Several weeks ago I heard an interview with Catherine Price who wrote Gratitude: A Journal. I have not read it, but…

Tess,

Wow--nice intro email. I'm heading to your blog because of Blogger Dozen and the question, Is there such a thing as too strong. You've piqued my interest as a reader, writer, and blogger. Kudos.

I would like a day off from life (where the blogging world is frozen) so I can thoroughly read a few blogs, like yours, without getting completely behind. I'm a follower now and I will spend some time with your blog soon.

Please come visit and follow me at: http://mymotherstuttered.blogspot.com/

Cheers,

Ellen

Welcome Tess!

Hope you enjoy it here? it can be a bit overwhelming I am pretty new to this site myself and to the world of blog!

I have found it to be a great place to network with readers and writers alike, and being passionate about both this is right up my alley.

I am currently working on my debut novel, a Paranormal Romance called “This Life” which you can check out on my blog http://can-duu.blogspot.com/

Hope to see you there!
