About Me:
I am an author of 7 books to date, which is partly why I am here, but I also have this project where I am identifying and showcasing all artists from the area where I was born - Hull & East Yorkshire. Incredibly, there are hundreds (I fear thousands) of published artists: http://www.a63revisited.com

I belong to blog sites targeted at writers (I really like http://www.speakwithoutinterruption.com/site/) but I write primarily because I am a reader, so this place seems ideal.

Review of 'For King and Country' by Annie Wilkinson

If you are strict enough with yourself to follow the injunction ‘never judge a book by its cover’, here in a positive way is where you might consider aiming yourself next.

The cover of… Continue

Review of 'Seers' by Karen Wolfe

Ever since the publication of ‘The Philosopher’s Stone’, I have been troubled by a niggling concern. It doesn’t keep me awake at night but I do regularly accost strangers and ask them “Whatever happened to Harry Potter’s grandparents?”.

Harry Potter was a baby when his parents were killed. His parents… Continue

Is this the new Dan Brown or just the Second Coming?

Scott Pack, the Head Buyer of Waterstones, once famously boomed “Who on earth could care less what Tim Adams of The Observer thinks about anything?”, his point being that upmarket critical opinion was no indicator of sales potential except perhaps by way of negative correlation (‘the more the praise, the less the sales’). No, what Scott was looking for was the next Dan Brown not an up-and-coming literary stylist.

He upset many an author and many a ‘quality’ journalist (not least Tim Adams), but… Continue

Review of 'Invisible Justice' by Kim Jewell

The book industry has gone Wild West and, as we all know, the outlaws are typically a lot more fun and enterprising than the law men, the only problem being where to find them. One of their secret hide-outs is Authonomy where authors showcase whole or part books (a minumum of 10,000 words) which you can freely read electronically and comment upon. I have decided that as I come across really interesting books on Authonomy, I'll blog my review here (I only review work I am recommending).Continue

Happy Holidays!

You may not know me or my work but I am the author of six critically acclaimed, award winning novels and I have been nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction. On Jan 9th 2010 my debut novel SUGAR will celebrate it’s 10th anniversary and I hope you will buy a copy or to help commemorate this milestone. And yes, Kindle purchases count!

Praise for the novels of Bernice L. McFadden:

"Searing and expertly imagined." - Toni Morrison

“Bernice L. McFadden is a master storyteller.” Adriana Trigiana

"Vivid." - The New York Times

"Eloquent..." (McFadden) is a talent worth watching." - The Washington Post

Peace & Light,

I read The White Hotel when I was still quite young, in high school, and it was just such an eyeopener to what a modern novel could be, it haunted me for ages. I remember it is quite a confronting novel but not in the usual way that novels about the Holocaust are thought of as confronting, it was such an intense book. I was probably not really mature enough to fully appreciate it at the time, but now you have me thinking about a few books from the past which I may revisit.

Hi Tim, thanks for the friend request, I see you like poetry, something I should read more of. I enjoy literary fiction, but I work with kids so I end up reading a lot of children's lit. Your work sounds intriguing, I will try and catch up with one of your novels when I get a break in the school/study routine.
The discussion on obscure favourites was an interesting one and it has made me think I shoud seek out more of Yourcenar's work. The Ackroyd novel Chatterton seems nicely ironic in the terms of the discussion, since in part it explores the transcience and nature of art. Happy reading and writing.

Hi Tim

Was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like. Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link to a summary in case you're interested:
