Banker to the Poor

I never read non-fiction. like...ever. I can't remember the last thing I read besides the newspaper and my scriptures that wasn't primarily fictional. I found out about Muhammad Yunus' book Banker to the Poor a while back from my good friend and it sounded okay and when Tom and I were going to spend 13 hours driving in the car I hoped this would work out for both of us...he is a self help/technology/survival story guy and I mostly read ya fiction. Not the best reading match but we… Continue

the plain janes (graphic novels challenge #2)

the outcast crowd - the new girl, the smart girl, the jock girl, and the wannabe actress. in this graphic novel by cecil castellucci and jim rugg, all of these high school "rejects" are named jane. when main jane, who the story follows, lived in the city, a bomb went off where she was hanging out. though jane was uninjured physically, she cut off and dyed her hair and visited a john doe who was injured in the bombing. she looks through his sketchbook, the only thing he had on him, and… Continue

the host

ah, stephenie meyer. i admit the cover of this book gives me the willies but off goes the dust jacket and viola! so that worked out well for me.

melanie's body has been abducted by aliens...in the most literal sense. the wanderer, a "soul" which apparently looks like a large silver centipede, had been inserted into melanie, her host. melanie is supposed to fade away but she refuses to let the wanderer, who becomes known as wanda, to force her out of… Continue

castle waiting (graphic novel challenge #1)

my first graphic novel! i was not sure how this was going to go. sure, i read the comics in the washington post but haven't read anything like this before. linda medly's castle waiting is a compliation of the stories of several characters who have all ended up at castle waiting.

the story begins with a mostly traditional sleeping beauty retelling...up until she's kissed by the prince. at that point, sleeping beauty takes off with prince hans and leaves the castle and it's… Continue

briar rose (ya challenge #5)

i think jane yolen is one of the truly great ya authors. this "sleeping beauty" story is truly a tale of victims of the holocaust - specifically victims not usually mentioned in general holocaust literature. rebecca's grandmother, gemma, is constantly telling her the story of sleeping beauty...but it is not the traditional story she and her sisters read in books or hear from their friends. as gemma is dying, she tells rebecca, "i am briar rose." this leads rebecca on a journey to… Continue

Dear
Book Lover:

On Jan 9th, 2010 my debut novel, SUGAR will celebrate its 10th anniversary and in order to commemorate this milestone I am campaigning to sell 10,000 copies between now and that date.

“Bernice L. McFadden's first novel begins with the brief, poetic description of a crime so startling that the reader is helplessly drawn in, as if a bright red door stood ajar on a bleak and forbidding house. Pearl Taylor's daughter, Jude, has been found murdered and mutilated near a field at the edge of town. "The murder had white man written all over it," writes McFadden. "But no one would say it above a whisper. It was 1940. It was Bigelow, Arkansas. It was a black child. Need any more be said?" In the years that follow, Pearl catches sight of Jude in so many strangers that when Sugar Lacey comes to town and sets up her unwholesome "business" in the house next door, she doesn't know whether to believe what she sees in Sugar's face: a striking similarity to Jude, dead 15 years. In her sedate but supple prose--rising at times to a light, unforced lyricism in the description of landscape or character--the author perfectly renders the closed and protective society of a small Southern town, the superstitions, gossip, and prying.”

I’m asking that you purchase a copy of SUGAR for yourself, a friend or family member. And if you could help spread the word by blogging, twittering ad Face-booking my campaign, it would mean the world to me.

Peace & Light,

Bernice L. McFadden

Early Endorsements for “A Circle of Souls”

Linda Fairstein, NYT Bestselling Author: "A fascinating debut - this novel takes the reader to the darkest places in the human soul, from a writer with the authenticity to lead us there. A stunning thriller and an important read."

Judge Judy Sheindlin, star of the Judge Judy Show: "The seminal work of this fine author kept me glued to my chair until the adventure was over and the mystery solved. A great read!"

Book Synopsis:

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.
In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

Hi,

My name is Chris Tusa, and I'm a writer from New Orleans. I am writing because my debut novel, Dirty Little Angels, is now available, and I was hoping you might be willing to mention it on your blog (or review it). If you're interested, I'd be glad to send you an e-book version of the book. Just let me know. I've included a summary of the novel below:

Dirty Little Angels
Set in the slums of New Orleans, among clusters of crack houses and abandoned buildings, Dirty Little Angels is the story of sixteen year old Hailey Trosclair. When the Trosclair family suffers a string of financial hardships and a miscarriage, Hailey finds herself looking to God to save her family. When her prayers go unanswered, Hailey puts her faith in Moses Watkins, a failed preacher and ex-con. Fascinated by Moses's lopsided view of religion, Hailey, and her brother Cyrus, begin spending time down at an abandoned bank that Moses plans to convert into a drive-through church. Gradually, though, Moses's twisted religious beliefs become increasingly more violent, and Hailey and Cyrus soon find themselves trapped in a world of danger and fear from which there may be no escape.

If you'd like to read the first chapter before you commit, feel free to visit my web site:

Thanks so much,
Chris
