REVIEW: The Comittment: Love, Sex, Marriage and My Family by Dan Savage

The first book that I read of Dan Savage's was "The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant." Other than the incredibly long titles, I've enjoyed both of these two books.

The Commitment is all about Savage's relationship with his boyfriend and their neverending battle over whether or not to get married. Dan and Terry have been together for 10 years and are commited to one another, but both have specific… Continue

Review: The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher

Synopsis:

It is a summer's night in 1860. In an elegant detached Georgian house in the village of Road, Wiltshire, all is quiet. Behind shuttered windows the Kent family lies sound asleep. At some point after midnight a dog barks. The family wakes the next morning to a horrific discovery: an unimaginably gruesome murder has taken place in their home. The household reverberates with shock, not least because the guilty party is surely still among them. Jack Whicher of Scotland Yard, the most… Continue

REVIEW: Killing the Shadows by Val McDermid

I experienced this novel via an audiobook. I must tell you though, that I listened to the whole first disc at least twice through. I had a heck of a time at the start of this one because of the accent of the narrator. Word choices and pronunciations are a little hard to catch at first, but once I got going, it became easier. In fact, I actually began to like the her and her accent!

Killing the Shadows is a story about a serial… Continue

The Pros & Cons of "The Shack" - Part 1

I confiscated one of my husband's Christmas presents.

When I saw him unwrap a copy of The Shack by William P. Young, I was elated. I've been hearing the buzz about this book since last spring, but just never picked up a copy.

I have to admit, it wasn't the storyline that compelled me to read the book. It was the controversy.

Some friends thought it was wonderful. Others thought it was heresy.

I read the book. Actually, I enjoyed the book.… Continue

Happy New Year! (and My Resolutions)

Happy New Year's blessings to everyone!

As we stand at the beginning of 2009, it is time to once again think about resolutions. And to be quite honest, this year I'm having a hard time getting started.

I guess I could compartmentalize my life and try to create resolutions based on the different roles I fill: Disciple, Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend, Teacher, Church Organist, Aspiring Author, Self (which could be further divided into Spiritual, Physical, Mental,… Continue

WOE IS ME by Lynda Coker

“He’s turned his life around. He used to be depressed and miserable. Now he’s miserable and depressed.” David Frost

A humorous thought when first read, overwhelmingly sad when pondered.

Who of us does not know how it feels to experience a wave of melancholy, an inexplicable sadness, a doom of sorts?

Many people deal with depression after holidays and during the long, grey days of winter. Writers are not immune. In fact, we are sometimes more prone… Continue

Bloom by Elizabeth Scott

There's a difference between falling down and letting go.

Lauren had always been the girl that everyone have been jealous of because Dave is her boyfriend, the guy who was hot, atheletic and smart. And also, her best friend, Katie is dating Dave's good friend, Marcus, suming up to the perfect pair. They had been dating for quite some time, and Lauren began to find Dave starting to make plans for their future… Continue

Read my lips by Teri Brown

She's got an eye for gossip.

Serena Nelson is deaf. She can read lips. Recently, she had unwillingly moved house to be nearer to her relatives according to her parents. They hope that their decision would allow her to fit in. Unfortunately, she found out that things might go the exact opposite. The school was teeming with cheerleaders but not even a single skater chick like her in view. Then she saw Miller, a hot guy that send… Continue

Unwind by Neal Shusterman

In a society where unwanted teens are salvaged for their body parts,

three runaways fight the system that would 'unwind' them.

The war is resolved, but with an agreement so cruel that it would affect the whole world. The Bill of Life states that human life may not be touched from the moment of conception until a child reaches the age of thirteen. However, between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, a parent may choose to… Continue
