Sales are increasing! My blog is now averaging about 75-100 hits an hour. My Facebook Fan page has almost 3,500 “likes” and my Authors Den profile is averaging 100 hits a day. So, here’s the breakdown of all my promotional and marketing efforts so far. The newspaper article scheme did nothing for sales but probably exposed me to a few new people. I would recommend against it. The ads I paid good money for, like the Litopia and YA Reads.com did almost nothing for sales. Perhaps, I got a dozen…

10 Class Management Skills

One of the first teaching aides I learned as a trainee instructor was the list of class management skills. I had to memorize all ten and demonstrate them in a classroom situation. During each of my recertification seminars, these skills were reinforced and practiced. These skills show how well the instructor is…

Happy Birthday Mercer Mayer - December 30

Can you freeze bubbles? My first thought was, "Sure, it's just water and soap. Of course, it can freeze." Then, I did a Google search and found one of those unreliable "Answers" websitesthat said, "The ice crystals would pop it. The air on inside would shrink and create a vacuum that would automatically pop the bubble."  Even after reading this, I wanted to believe that my kids and I could freeze bubbles.  I…

2011 is coming to an end

Hello everyone.

Another year is coming to an end. Isn't it amazing how fast each year flies by? I know they say the older you get the faster the year zooms by. Here, I can only speak for myself. This one seemed to whiz by in an instant. (Did I give my age away?) Of course a lot of things happened this year, so I'm sure it wasn't as fast as I'm saying.

First major thing that happened in my life, was my…

Inspiration - The Elusive Mystery

Inspiration - what an elusive creature.  Where does it come from?  Can one even define it?  For me there are several versions of it.  First there is the inspiration that gives birth to the initial idea for a story or a novel.  It can be such a small thing.

Let me give you an example.  I am currently working on a novel called The Seed. This is how simply an idea can emerge.  I was sitting down.  It was summer or early autumn and I was barefoot.  I felt a foreign object on the…

I won Out of Oz: The Final Volume in the Wicked Years by Gregory Maguire and am happy to pay it forward in a giveaway! The first bestselling novel in this series, Wicked, inspired the Broadway musical. If you love all the characters from The Wizard of Oz, then you will want to see that musical. It gave me chills and I’m addicted to the soundtrack.

So you want to know who Wenona Hulsey is when I'm not a writer.

So you want to know who Wenona Hulsey is when I'm not a writer.  Very hard thing to do is separate my life from my writing.  My mind is always spinning on a scene or looking for inspiration to strike, even while I slave away at my day job as a shipping manager for a medium size company or while I'm taking my two kids shopping or to the lake.  I don't think I have a life that can be separated because my writing is part of my day to day life just like eating at my favorite Chinese restaurant…

2011: On an Off Year

SLIGHTLY OFF THE MARK

Whew. Was 2011 an exhausting year, or what? It felt like the whole world spent the last twelve months running a marathon at internet speed. No wonder my feet hurt.

It may turn out to be something of a watershed year for me, as I accomplished one of my life’s biggest goals. No, I didn’t get into Bill Gates’ will. No, I didn’t get the word “snow” banished from the dictionary. No, I didn’t win a lifetime supply…
