A Sincere Person by Arnold Jansen op de Haar

If you live outside the Netherlands you probably haven’t heard of Dutch singer Patricia Paay, unless your name is David Bowie.

And now her biography has been published. I haven’t read it, but it’s hard to miss: there are new revelations every day. Yet another person who strenuously denies he has slept with Ms Paay as part of a damage limitation exercise.

Except David Bowie: he admits everything. It happened during a song festival in Malta, where he obviously slept with…

Clean Break

By David Klein

Broadway Books, 376 pgs

978-0-307-71683-5

Rating: 3

The only people who stay in character in Clean Break are a gambling addict (Adam) and a 10-year-old child (Spencer). Now I don't know about you but I would tend to believe that the man with no character left, and the young one just developing character, would be the ones most likely to violate. Instead it's the adults, who have up until now been solid, responsible and dependable…

Nothing is Impossible

An Amish Home. That’s what Allan has now. He found his path and so much goodness came into his life. My new stories are set in Karsten Field about eight to ten years after An Amish Journey. Allan is happily married with two young children. His oldest daughter, Alice, even has a family of her own. Life is good.
That doesn’t mean they don’t face any challenges. Sometimes, when life is that good, we need reminders. An…

Bittersweet Song of Cicadas

“One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter.”

–Henry David Thoreau

Tired of the air conditioning and needing fresh air, I recently opened one of my kitchen windows and I heard them.  I sighed.  The sweetness of the familiar summer sound mingled with the bitterness of what that sound meant.  The trees thick with the cicadas’ song reminded me that the long-lit warm days of summer are coming to an end.  Then within days, it started, the back-to-school…

I'm working on it

I thought once I completed the story of Set Free that I would move on to something else. I discovered I was wrong. With An Amish Home, I really enjoy going back to Karsten Field. The first story is available for $0.99 at this link - http://goo.gl/oc82v…

Red Leaves and the Living Token - by Benjamin David Burrell

There is a lot of originality in this dark tale. Burrell writes very well, and with a great deal of invention. I can only find any significant fault any in the concentration demanded of the reader. A little more description of each character on first appearance, or an index of characters profiles and key locations, would have helped me. My poor memory, alongside my tendency to skim read, are certainly much of my problem and so I really don't wish to labour the…

Happy Birthday David Small - February 12

Imagine a stack of one million books.  Now imagine that they are all the same book. (For my friends in the 12 x 12 Writing Challenge, just for fun, imagine the book as a published form of one of your own manuscripts. Ahhhh.......OK! Back to reality!)  Actually, the enormous stack of books you are imagining isImogene's Antlers by David Small. It has sold over 1,000,000 copies since 1985…

Arnold Jansen op de Haar: Chased by Muppets

Fox News argues that the new Muppets film aims to brainwash children into thinking all rich people are bad, because it features a very evil oil tycoon.

Well, they didn’t voice objections against the inventor of Donald Duck or the Grimm brothers, for encouraging highly violent behaviour.

I think, in general, society is becoming more Muppet-like. Consider David Beckham: with a voice like that – and don’t forget his hair – he must be a Muppet. Elvis Presley and Michael…

German Unity Sausage by Arnold Jansen op de Haar

Following the talks in Brussels, the front page of The Times showed David Cameron as Manneken Pis aiming at the head of Nicolas Sarkozy, and the next day someone remarked to me that Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel reminded her of Punch and Judy.

Would the true leader please stand up? Because that’s the problem: we’re missing a leader with a vision.

Mark Rutte, the Dutch Prime Minister, tried to convince David Cameron. They looked like two public schoolboys. Mark…

I Never Thought I'd See The Day by Dr. David Jeremiah - Great book to promote discussion!

An examination of a "culture at a crossroads" I Never Thought I'd See The Day shows us the 10 signs that our America is in trouble!  Dr. David Jeremiah shows us a new spin on Atheism, how Persia went from a protector of the Jewish people to persecutor, the reduced influence of the Bible on the Church of today and other very important topics Christians, and our culture are facing.
"...the big question Christians are asking:” says Dr. David Jeremiah "What…

Happy Birthday David Shannon - October 5

This blog, for over a year, has been largely inspired by my daughter's love of picture books.  My 4-year-old son has participated in all the of birthday celebrations but he is now sparking ideas of his own with his sister off at school all day.

This week's celebration started when we had just rushed back to the house from dropping my daughter off at the bus stop and we were soaking wet.  This was the third day in a row of rain and I had run out of fun things to do in the house… Continue
