Paddington Bear Liberation Front by Arnold Jansen op de Haar

After arriving by Eurostar I travel by tube from King’s Cross–St Pancras to Paddington. For the Olympic Games the names of these stations will be changed to Nadia Comaneci and Lionel Messi.

Paddington Bear is so famous that tourists often think the station is named after him, but during the Olympic Games tube stations will be renamed after Olympic legends. I feel for Paddington Bear; will he change into his football shorts?

In the meantime I have founded the Paddington…

"The Foundation PIt" by Andrey Platanov

Maybe we forget the past because we know we repeat it. The past might as well be fiction, a made-up story as allegory, warning us of evil without the weight of fact. History can be brutal and violent. The urge to move on up the river, to an imagined reality where our better selves reside, gives us the ability to…

100th Birthday of Tennessee Williams

Tennessee Williams would have been 100 years old today. He was a remarkable dramatist, and he remains an important writer in American literature.

Ironically, this week in my American literature class, I read my first work by Mr. Williams. A Streetcar Named Desire was…

But I call it her cape,

Cuz she rescues me from everything I can't escape...

The Villain heartache,

So my report is she saved me,

Dayve Louis Lane...

Ah the Glorious Ms. Austen

I realize that as an English Major is it a travesty that I've somehow managed to get through college without reading any Jane Austen... Somehow, I don't think I should have made it out of high school without delving into the works of such a beloved author. Does that say something about the state of American education? If so, it certainly isn't a compliment.…

Review; SOUTH OF BROAD by Pat Conroy

Pat Conroy's much anticipated latest novel begins in 1969 Charleston, South Carolina where we meet the King Family. Leopold Bloom King, the narrator of the story is the son of an extremely structured high school principal mother and a lovable science teacher father. Although from the outside, the Kings look like any average Southern Catholic… Continue

Book Review: Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief

As a child, I was enthralled by the stories of the Greek Gods. Zeus and the titans; Hercules and his labors; Aphrodite and her many lovers; these were stories that filled me with awe and wonder. I read books about these fantastic Olympians and their many scandalous, if not obscene, affairs with mortals. Yes, Western influence came at a very young age. Add some Hollywood movies (Clash of the Titans; Jason and the Argonauts) to this process of acculturation and viola! I was hooked on the… Continue

A Pig In The Rumble Seat: A Wonderful Collection of Short Stories-review

A Pig in the Rumble Seat

Author: Edward Hujsak

I absolutely loved this book! Thank goodness I don't have to choose a favorite story, I would be hard pressed to do so. All in all, a delightful collection that includes poetry, memoirs of the author's life ranging from tales during the depression to space rocket launches, his work developing the Atlas and Centaur, some fascinating science fiction and even contemporary… Continue

Short Stories of the People and Places of Alaska

Alaskans: Stories

Author: Tanyo Ravicz

Publisher: iUniverse, Inc.

I couldn't put this book down! The characters are wonderful, richly drawn and eccentric, and I found I cared deeply about them all.

As a long time lover of the Alaskan life and peoples, I knew this book would be great fun to read. I did not anticipate just how involved I would become in each story, and they all left me wanting more about each character. Many of these stories have stayed with me… Continue

Nigeria, West-Africa!!! Why me???

"What's the big deal?" You ask from the side or your mouth, not letting go of the Nintendo cruiser you clutch in your hands.

Well, the big deal is that my parents panicked and catapulted us from the our lovely home in San Francisco to the middle of nowhere in Owasso, Oklahoma. Major downer!

You sip from your soda can. "I still don't get it," you mutter, slurping the drink around in your mouth, "so you relocated to the mid-lands,… Continue
