Different historical fiction to read over Christmas

Summary: A fascination with Spain’s history led to an historical novel trilogy based on the descendents of Ferdinand and Isabella. Publication in the UK has led to worldwide digital ebook sales and print book contracts from Portugal and Brazil.

A Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy by Linda Carlino

The books of the trilogy are connected (mother, son, grandson) but each one is a stand-alone read.

That Other Juana…

eBooks: a boon to readers and self publishers

The speed at which the sales of Kindle and other digital ebooks have taken off has been quite spectacular. Amazon online sales of digital books are now greater than sales of all other printed book forms. My own Kindle Books are already outselling the paperbacks by more than 4 to 1. With the recent launch of Google eBooks this trend may well accelerate.

Now the ease of self-publishing in digital form makes it possible for anyone to publish and…

Reigns in Spain

Spanish history and Spanish royals as the subject for historical fiction can make for very entertaining and interesting reading and provide a real change.

Intriguing characters and fascinating stories abound: Juana la Loca (Joan the Mad) who was imprisoned for most of her life by her family and denied her rightful claim to the Spanish throne; the outrageously ill-tempered Emperor Charles V who ruled most of Europe - badly - and whose only solace was in memories of…

Had enough Tudor historical fiction?

If you’ve had enough of historical fiction based on Tudor England and need a change perhaps A Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy would be just the thing.

When English author Linda Carlino first began visiting Spain she had no idea that years later she was going to write historical novels about Spanish royals.

But that’s exactly what she did. She wrote three novels about the most important descendents of Ferdinand and Isabella.

The books of the trilogy are connected…

Portuguese and Brazilian publishing contracts were never dreamed of when the author Linda Carlino first visited Spain in 1988. Her five week independent tour, which included Palencia, Burgos, Madrid, Toledo, Aranjuez, Cuenca, Cordoba, Granada, Seville, Cadiz, Avila, Salamanca and Valladolid, was a life-changing event. Looking for Something New in Historical Fiction?

A Matter of Pride by Linda Carlino is very funny and also at times, very sad.

In 1557 a prematurely aged, ill, and very irritable and grumpy Emperor Charles V retires to a small secluded monastery in southwest Spain.

He suffers from painful chronic gout, crippling arthritis and excruciatingly painful piles. He has to be carried around in a chair and continually washed and pampered with vinegar bandages.

Sounds like fun? It gets better!

He has lost most of his teeth and…

A Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy

A Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy by Linda Carlino

The books are connected (mother, son, grandson) but each book can be read separately.

That Other Juana (Queen Juana I of Spain) Juana la Loca

Juana founded the Hapsburg dynasties of Spain and Austria but her life was ruined by three men: her husband a blatant womaniser and political schemer; her father who betrayed and isolated her; and her son who imprisoned her for a further thirty years.

Her spirited…

Philip II, Mary Tudor – and other women

Wives & Other Women, the third historical novel of Linda Carlino’s Hapsburg Trilogy, is the story of Philip II of Spain's wives and mistresses and his desperate need to provide a male heir in politically arranged marriages.

The action takes place in the second half of the 16th century, mainly in Spain, but also in England, Belgium and France.

Looking for some different historical fiction?

How about the story of Juana la Loca, (Joan the Mad) That Other Juana by Linda Carlino - beautifully written, compelling and unforgettable.

Writers, dramatists filmmakers and even historians have distorted and sensationalised the story of Juana’s life for their own ends.

She wasn’t a nymphomaniac, she didn’t murder her husband, she didn’t…
