An Olympic Duck by Arnold Jansen op de Haar

Everyone in London is an information point. While my publisher and I were walking towards Hyde Park, at the bottom of the street, we were asked three times for directions to Hyde Park.

This is the great thing about London: the city itself is a bigger attraction than the Olympic Games. The tube is not only a form of transport but also an IQ test.

The opening ceremony had nothing to do with sport and was so wonderful that the athletes’ parade amounted to the low point of the…

Troubled Waters by Jon Wakeham

Product Details "Troubled Waters" by Jon Wakeham.

This story about an early James Bond type character develops an interesting plot amongst a satisfactory balance of real and imaginary events, places and people. Wakeham has done a masterful job of recreating what to me felt like a very accurate reflection of life amongst the well-connected of London in 1909. At times I felt that I could have been reading a contemporary writer to Conan Doyle, E.M. Forster, or Lord Dunsany, only to be deterred…

Book Review: The Morning Gift

SPOLIERS! Don't say I did not warn you.

Eva Ibbotson's novels were known to me as works of the fantastic. That is why, I was pretty surprised when I discovered, in all places -- at Powerbooks, Cebu, her romance novels. All three of them were displayed alongside chiclit and YA books in the Juvenile section of the bookstore. It was The Morning Gift that intrigued me most.

Ruth, a Catholic young lady of Jewish decent had to marry thirty year old Quinton Somerville, a British… Continue

De Marco Empire Prologue

Prologue

It was the day of the preliminary hearing and the closed court room was for immediate family and close friends only. The press were banned from the building and the surrounding vicinity, which spanned three miles in every direction, but they had helicopter coverage, so hopefully if anything significant happened they wouldn‘t miss it. The whole process was being carefully monitored by the metropolitan police force. This was going to be a high profile case, one that the public… Continue

London is the Best City in America -- blech.

It is a very bad thing when a reader that is just barely out of college can recognize a terrible book that is written like a college assignment. Yep, I'm talking about Laura Dave's London is the Best City in America. More than 5 times while reading this book I expressed out loud, "Are you kidding me?!?" This statement was made in response to the many many many cliche' circumstances taking place in this book. Some other reasons I hated this book:

- rambling, repeating of ideas with… Continue
