Lily’s Daughter is a well written, deeply engaging memoir of, as she was known then, Zsuzsa Osvath’s childhood in Hungary. The period is 1940 to 1957, a period overshadowed by two European disasters, and one failed revolution. The first disaster was WWII and the second Stalin. The…

August 2011, I Finally published my first book and officially became an Author. This was a life long dream that had finally became a REALITY. I give God all the glory for allowing me to write my mother’s story. All I Had Was Your Birth Certificate( and Memories That Remain) a true life story about a young mother’s struggles, heartache and pain after losing her child. This book is a story of Hope and Inspiration and a daughter’s perseverance and determination to find her sibling…

I loved this (narrative non-fiction) book. Janzen delves into the contrast between her Mennonite religious upbringing and her husband’s Pentecostal church; her immersion into rural-ish Michigan culture from years of urban university setting, the ying and yang relationship with her straight-shooting (literally) and talking boyfriend; and by-the-way, harrowing breast cancer survivor story.
I especially liked her honest discussion of religion without getting soapboxy. Will you like it?…

Regression
This subject was something that I really had trouble getting my head around, why would anyone revisit a point in their life where it spelt nothing but pain and suffering. Why the hell would I? A place you would think that your own consciousness would crawl over hot coals to keep you from revisiting. When you consider that statement it’s easy to see my confusion. What we have to remember here is that it’s the action of a mind struggling in the realms of the reality. At that precise moment in…

From Trona to Austin is a wonderful journey to appreciate
I've just begun trying non-fiction writing -- essays, memoirs. So I thought Trona to Austin by Paul MacLean might give me some hints on what works, how a published non-fiction writer gets published. Even before the prologue he gave me confidence by his comment "I simply want to leave a few tracks so further generations can know what came before."
I don't know that I have the ability to write so meaningfully of my generations' tracks as Paul does of his life, its up and downs, the…

New York Times bestselling author, Thurston Clarke, has given Midlife Monkeylala: Escape to and from a Tropical Paradise rave reviews, and I have been receiving positive feedback from readers all over the world. The book is the true story of a teacher who who survived several near-death experiences on Roatan and lived to tell about it. I'm that teacher who was a well-meaning gringa who not only directed a bilingual school, lived in a fairly primitive village, but also attempted to operate…

The Crutch We Depend On
I’m in a bad way I have only just made it to the bathroom before throwing up; sitting there on my cold floor tiles I put my head between my knees just to keep upright. The room is spinning, rotating all around me like some never ending merry go round. I know that this is where I will sleep tonight, not trusting myself to be too far away from the bathroom. Its cold the house is in darkness and has never felt so empty. It’s just me and my drunken stupor, along with my demons, which once again…
