Death and the Penguin (Le pingouin #1) by Andrey Kurkov

Amusing little book, but I'm not quite sure what to make of it. According to other reviews, it is a very accurate picture of contemporary life in the Ukraine. Interesting. I can't imagine calling the local PD to come around and care for my pets whenever I am out of town...while there is a spot of mystery, there is not much (satisfactory) resolution. Perhaps the second installment will shed more light...all that said, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely pick up the next in…

The Scent of Rain and Lightning by Nancy Pickard

I recently joined a book club and we just finished The Scent of Rain and Lightning by Nancy Pickard. I liked this story. A great mystery/mild thriller. There is some sexual content, nothing graphic, but mentionable. Nancy is from KS and set the book in a small farming community in a fictional city in KS, but really did her research and describes is so well even mentions monument rocks that do exist just by a different name. The first 120 pages seemed a bit scattered to me at first; so many… Continue

An Epic Tale of Power and Greed

Blood, Money, Power, written by author, Michele Marie Tate, is a fictional, historical saga, based on a true story. It's a tale similar to those that shout at us from news headlines every day - how greed and political power has led to fraud and even murder.

Tate takes her readers back to the gilded times of William Randolph Hearst, Charlie Chaplin, Marion Davis and Gloria Swanson. Everything was gay and the champagne flowed freely at the many parties where celebrities and the wealthy…

Dark and Stormy Nights

This is a blog I posted on my website a couple of months ago (www.marjamcgraw.com). I thought someone might enjoy it.

Opening a story with “It was a dark and stormy night” has become kind of joke to some. Many say it’s too much of a cliché to use in a story. Okay, so how about, “It was a dark and stormy day”? Maybe that’s not quite such a cliché, but it certainly isn’t (probably) going to be as scary…

Voices in My Head?

Someone asked me if, as an author, I hear voices in my head. The answer is, of course. Although not audible voices, every character I write about speaks to me. Right now I’m reading two of my own books. I started a new series (The Bogey Mysteries) and now I’m ready to write another Sandi Webster mystery. I need to find my Sandi voice again.

What this means is that each character has its own personality, and its own habits. Fictional characters are just as…
