Happy Birthday G. Brian Karas - September 27

Happy Birthday G. Brian Karas - September 27
Farmers and gardeners may watch the weather report hoping for rain, but I watch praying for sunshine -- at least during the daylight hours.  Last night, I saw the weather forecast and it was predicting…

Happy Birthday Andrea Cheng - September 19

I had the pleasure of meeting Andrea Cheng this past summer at the Mazza Museum in Findlay, Ohio.  After she signed a book for my children, she told me that she shares her birthday with a very special person in her life.  I loved hearing her story and couldn't wait for her to share it with you.  The email that contained her birthday thoughts revealed even more significance regarding her special day:

The coolest thing about my…

Happy Birthday Betsy Snyder - September 10

One of the best things about birthdays are the treats. Children look forward to sharing a birthday treat with their friends at school, many of us love being treated to a special meal at a restaurant, and almost all of us indulge with a tasty dessert treat on our birthday.  In fact, birthday cake sounds REALLY good right now!

Our birthday celebration for author/illustrator Betsy Snyder is full of treats to share, including a memory of her favorite birthday treat, accompanied by a…

Happy Birthday Jon Scieszka - September 8

"Research shows that boys will read -- if they are given reading that interests them." I found this quote on Jon Scieszka's Guys Read website, whose mission is to help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers.  This quote was a perfect fit for today, since this was the first author birthday celebration at our house that was a "Boys Only" event.  My daughter is now in first grade and many of the upcoming birthday celebrations just won't fit into her… Continue

Happy Birthday Anita Silvey - September 3

How would you answer the question, What children's book changed the way you see the world? Is it a book from childhood...a book you read to your children...or a book you read to a class as teacher? Was it a gift or a favorite from the library?

Why was this book important to you and what did it teach you? Anita Silvey, a lover of stories and the stories behind the stories, set out to document the experience numerous leaders in our society had with their important children's… Continue

Happy Birthday Stan Berenstain - September 29

Our neighbor is like another grandmother for my children. She often invites them over to bake tasty treats and to do crafts. Occasionally, when there is a break between activities, she will read Berenstain Bears to them. The books she reads were saved from when her own children were younger. One day, she expressed to me that one of her favorite things… Continue

Michael Jackson King of Pop Music

Seventh child in the Jackson family, he became a prominent singer at the age of 11. Taking music industry by stride right from a small boy band to Jackson 5, finally becoming the King Of Pop, winning eight Grammy's during this roller coaster journey. From moonwalking into history and making fortunes to losing it all, he is a phenomena.

Poem: September 11, 2001

Failing to understand

why our nation is great,

an opportunity was sought

by souls cowardly lying in wait.

Focused on pure evil

as they have continually done,

an unholy attack was unleashed

on a day now known as 9-1-1.

Via the destruction

of New York's "Twin Towers"

the enemy crushed a symbol

of U.S. monetary power.

Beyond the resources to rebuild,

our country operates from a wealthy mindset;

so we can easily… Continue
