Black Enigma by Sara Furlong Burr, A Book Review

Enigma: mystery, somebody or something that is not easily explained or understood. That is just what you and Celaine are trying to figure out as you turn the pages. An enjoyable story, with characters that explode your mind.

Sara created a character that even when she exasperated you, you're admiration and hope for her was not deterred.  The story was drawn to keep you wanting to know what happened next.  It is a can't put it down just yet book, until you get to the end, which…

The Healing by Jonathan Odell: Is It Appropriate for Black History Month?

When I was looking for novels to review for Black History Month, I saw the publisher’s notes about The Healing by Jonathan Odell and it sounded like a perfect choice. Maybe because this novel is based on oral histories of the period, it wasn’t until I finished The Healing that I learned Jonathan Odell is white (see the quote below). I feel this story really needed to be told. I believe sometimes the most unlikely stories come to the very people who are meant to tell…

Black Diamond: Who Wouldn’t Love an Irish Horseracing Mystery?

When the publisher made available an advanced readers copy of Black Diamond by John F. Dobbyn, I jumped on it. I used to be a fan of horse-racing mysteries but I hadn’t read anything like that in a long time so it seemed like it was meant to be. After reading Black Diamond, I learned it’s Book #3 in this mystery series; however, it makes a great stand-alone novel. If you like a good mystery like I do, you’ll be pleased with this…

Castledance, Vol I (From the Chronicles of Fiarah) by K. L. Morgan

Castledance is a very well-written book of fantasy. I love the story, the plot, and the romance in it. The colorful people and places are vividly described in its pages. Stories about elfs, delfs, trolls, and humans mixed with magic makes for a real page-turner. The forces of evil are lurking about the land and they are staying secretly quiet for purposes of their own. The rest of the races must unite to vanquish the foe or die alone. It is beautifully written with vocabulary of its…

Detective Lieutenant Frank Ryman and his girl friend Jaysa have quarreled. His cases have come apart and he is despondent. He tells her he needs her and she says she cannot see him that night. Angry and surly he hangs up on her and goes home thinking that this might as well be the end for them. He is there for her, but she surely is not there for him. At home, he finds her there sitting in the dark.

He stood still, ambivalent. He wanted to kiss her blind, go into her body and never… Continue

Why is Noane, my main female character in Quest, black?

Some have asked me why I made the main character, the heroine, the 17 year-old Noane, African American (although she is in fact neither from African nor American, since Quest takes place on a mythical Earth in mythical times).

My answer has no political, racial or social application. I made her that way because that is always how she appeared in my head. Right from the start, Noane came to me out of the mist - or myst? - just as she is. Long black braids, beautiful brown skin,…
