fanfiction crossover: Storm Chaser and The Walking Dead!
Midwesterners have a way of just dealing with it when disaster strikes. Even in a zombie apocalypse:

I’ve mentioned that I wanted to do some crossover fanfiction involving the Storm Chaser universe, to mark the release of my short story collection. Although I do have a rough draft of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer story done, my wife Emily…

The Night Awakens is an anthology of shorts stories by different authors. They are well done, sprinkled with madness and love. Some are about a jealous lover who wants to kill, others about an overly protective friend who doesn’t want to be left without money. One is about a reporter who hates her job, and how her fear of the dark gives her boss an idea to commit a murder. The other is about an underpaid employee who is abused by his boss and how with a witch helps him get the upper…

Book Review: Dead Reckoning

My current guilty pleasure is watching The Tudors on DVD (a mother’s day present from my boys – clever chaps.) All of which set me thinking: how well do you know your Tudor history?
So here’s a simple question:
How Many Wives did Henry VIII have?
a) 6
b) 5
c) 4
d) 2
Now those of you with an English education will be counting on your fingers: Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived.
So…

As a veterinarian I’m constantly surprised by the resilience of the feline species. This week alone a 17 year old cat with kidney failure successfully underwent dental attention, a stray cat lost a leg but was eating the same night and a kitten fell 40 feet with barely a scratch to show for it! Its no wonder cats have a reputation for having nine lives - which set me wondering where the saying originated.
Research into this fable led me to ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians believed…

Last week I looked at how, in Victorian times, a cat’s reluctance to take medicine might help keep her alive. This week, I look at some of the remedies commonly inflicted on the poor, unsuspecting animals.
Vomiting.
Now as any cat owner knows, it’s perfectly normal for a cat to vomit from time to time. However if the vomiting became excessive, one Victorian remedy was to:

A 17th century Pedlar, his Dog and a Church Window.
Discover the true story of how an itinerant pedlar commerated his dog in a church painted window.
I came across the story of the Lambeth Pedlar and his dog whilst researching an article for the veterinary press. In the parish church of Saint Mary’s, Lambeth, to there is a painted glass window of a man weighted down with a back pack, with a dog at his feet. This is…
