Review; SOUTH OF BROAD by Pat Conroy

Pat Conroy's much anticipated latest novel begins in 1969 Charleston, South Carolina where we meet the King Family. Leopold Bloom King, the narrator of the story is the son of an extremely structured high school principal mother and a lovable science teacher father. Although from the outside, the Kings look like any average Southern Catholic… Continue

Book Review: Saints In Limbo by River Jordan

This is a very interesting book that has some mystical elements mixed in that make it a unique story of faith and the power of one's mind over regret. It was described to me by the author's publicist as Christian Fiction, but the godly elements are subtle and does not overpower the story at all. Full review at Books and Cooks

Book Review: Etta by Gerald Kolpan

I've always enjoyed reading western-themed novels and Etta by Geald Kolpan is a very entertaining story. It's the fictionilzed account of Etta Place, girlfriend to the "Sandance Kid" and member of the notorious Hole-In-The-Wall Gang. Not much is known about this mysterious horsewoman, but Kolpan mixes some historical facts along with his own imagination to give the reader an adventurous and enjoyable read. Book Review: The Help by Kathryn Stockett

This debut novel by southerner Kathryn Stockett is a beautifully written story of three women, who for their own reasons join together to tell stories of what its like to work as a maid for white women in the 1960's during the Civil Rights Movement. There is so much to this story besides the obvious and i recommend it highly as I'm sure it will be a favorite of book lovers. You can read my full review here.

Book Review: The Triumph of Deborah by Eva Etzioni-Halevy

The Triumph of Deborah is the fictionalized story of Deborah, the much adored and highly respected prophetess from the Old Testament. It centers around Deborah, who helped lead the Israelites into war with the Canaanites and what she sacrificed in order to help her people. It also introduces us to Ashera a Canaanite princess and Nogah, the illigitimate daughter of the Canaanite King Jabin and an Israelite slave. It's a fascinating story both educational and entertaining. If you haven't… Continue

Book Review: The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

One of the things that surprised me most about this book was the differing opinions of its readers. I'm coming to realize that you either love it or hate it. Personally, I LOVED it. It's a different kind of book than I generally read. It has a mysterious gothic element that I don't know if I'd call 'fantasy', but there is a certain 'make believe' feel to it. That was part of the appeal for me. However, I've read many reviews that, in my opinion, took the book too seriously and picked the plot… Continue

Book Review: Tomato Girl by Jayne Pupek

This is the story of eleven-year-old Ellie Sanders, who is forced to abandon her childhood and deal with adult problems way before she should have. It's a heartbreaking but beautifully written story that is probably my favorite book of the year. It's an emotional story and one that will stay with you long after the last page.
