Happy Birthday Wendell Minor - March 17

My search for books by Wendell Minor at the library gave me quite a thrill this week  -- yes, I was actually giddy.  I found books about space, animals, history, famous americans, and even Halloween! I immediately thought to myself, "It has been too long since I made one of my 'Reading Experiences'." This week I unveil my third "Reading Experience" that features Wendell Minor, many of his great books, and lots of fun activities.…

Happy Birthday James Warhola - March 16

It would come as no surprise that I love hearing birthday stories. Last summer at the Mazza Museum Summer Conference, I heard James Warhola tell the story of the birthday card he gave his Uncle Andy Warhol, a famous artist, at the age of 7.  On the birthday card was a hand-drawn Campbell's Soup can (click here to see the postcard, near the bottom of the webpage) and it said Happy Birthday Uncle Andy, August 6, 1962 from James. Happy Birthday Ezra Jack Keats - March 11

Children's books have the power to influence. They can help a child learn to read. They can bring a parent and child closer together.  They can teach a child a concept. Happy Birthday Harry Bliss - March 9

I find birthday cake and picture books irresistible.  I am tempted by the decorative icing on a cake and the cover illustrations on a picture book.  I savor each bite of a piece of cake and each word on a page in picture book. The first bite of birthday cake is as good as the last word of a great picture book.  Following each, I often say, "Can I have another?" The only thing better than having birthday cake and reading a picture book would be to have them together! I hope you find our…

Happy Birthday Suse MacDonald - March 3

The slogan for my blog, "creating memorable family reading experiences by celebrating children's author and illustrator birthdays" is something I think about as I prepare each birthday celebration.  When I say "memorable," I most certainly mean that I strive for a "good" memory.  Our celebration for Suse MacDonald almost was remembered for being a colossal failure. My original idea for an activity was just too difficult for my little ones. Luckily, we found another way to celebrate that had…
