Happy Birthday Will Hillenbrand - May 31

When I started researching information on Will Hillenbrand, children's book author and illustrator of over 50 books,  I became fascinated by the pictures and description of his illustration process in Starting from Sketch: Inside the Picture Book with Will Hillenbrand.  (Hillenbrand describes his complete art process on his website).  In this downloadable PDF…

Happy Birthday Candace Fleming - May 24

A few weeks ago my wife and I breathed a sigh of relief when my daughter's birthday party ended without any major hiccups.  Once that party was over it was time to start planning for my youngest son's first birthday party.  The first birthday party for our children is huge.  We invite both sides of the family over to our house.  We spend weeks getting the house ready by checking off items on a long list.  We do everything to insure that things go smoothly.  However, even if you are well… Continue

Happy Birthday Arthur Dorros - May 19

My experience learning foreign languages has been unproductive. I took three years of French in high school. I can only remember random French words like pantalon (pants) and s'il vous plait (please). In college, I took 6 credit hours of Spanish.  I think my children know more Spanish than I do from watching Dora the Explorer and Diego.  I wish I would have retained more. Happy Birthday Jennifer Armstrong - May 12

My three kids and I want to go in separate directions when we get to the library.  Heading into the children's department is much like shopping with my wife's family on the day after Thanksgiving -- "And they're off!" My oldest son heads to the computers, my youngest son heads for the nearest shelf to see how many books he can remove, and I start to locate the books on my list for the next birthday celebration.  By the time my library bag is half full of books, I have lost track of my daughter… Continue

Celebrating Leo Lionni's Birthday - May 5

Today I celebrated Leo Lionni's birthday with my daughter's Kindergarten class. I was invited by her teacher to come in this week because the school is holding it's annual Right to Read Week.  When I looked at my author birthday calendar I knew celebrating Lionni's birthday would be perfect for a group of Kindergarteners. For our celebration we read three books, … Continue

Happy Birthday Rod Campbell - May 4

Right now, every day is a celebration for Rod Campbell at our house.  My 10 month-old son absolutely loves his book,Dear Zoo.  We read it at least once a day and he often pulls the book from his night stand by himself, pages through, and lifts the flaps.  I whole-heartedly agree with a statement from … Continue
