ALONE



The wind is from the north today,

A bitter chill from far away,…

LA PLACE

Hand in hand they swish and sway

Their fingers locked, entwined as if to pray.

I heard them first, their energy their sound,

A surge of colour, a rainbow with shopping bags abound.…

It was only a few weeks ago when I passed St Joseph's as the congregation ebbed away after Sunday Mass, smiling faces, hugs and handshakes, the slamming of a car door and waves through a window, I have to confess to a pang of guilt as I passed the church doors. I hadn't until now linked the two events, why would I, after all, the only thing both have in common is that they took place less than half a mile apart, well that and the subject of worship. Don't get me wrong I am not in any way…

I always head for the automatic doors, it's just what I do, and perhaps like some of you I catch my own reflection in the reinforced glass wall, before the sound of the motor and that gentle reassuring hum, opening both sides, welcoming me in, in from the cold, the shopping mall the high altar and all without touching, without the need for the routine tugging on my jacket sleeve slipping off my shoulder, pulled down around my fingers to grapple with the steel bar…
