Dear Mommy,

I bought this journal for you for mother’s day. Sorry it’s late. I’m sitting at work writing this letter, listening to Holly as she sings along t her opera music. It’s funny how life is sometimes. I think about situations I am in and I can’t help but laugh. A year ago I would have never imagined myself working here.

I just finished reading Donald Millers book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. His book was a little different from his others. It made me think of you because it is all about story. Throughout the book, Donald Miller learns the basis of writing a good story. He teaches you what kind of stories bring an audience in and make you finish your story a more fulfilled person.

He used a scenario that I thought was funny. He said that no one would want to go to the movies and watch a story about a man whose life’s goal was to buy a Volvo .No one would care as he saved his money and the audience wouldn’t be moved watching him drive off the lot checking his windshield wipers as the credits rolled. He said that if what we choose to do with our lives won’t make a story meaningful, it won’t make a life meaningful either.

You have never been afraid of doing things to make your life meaningful. Everyone flocks to your stories and it’s because yours are the best. Your stories leave people inspired and fulfilled and that is a gift.

I have been looking at my life recently and all my experiences since I have been here. They are definitely interesting and I am glad I finally have stories to tell. I look at my life and although I don’t see an exact purpose, I am striving for something even if I don’t know what it is. So I am sitting here at the trash company (which is a great conversation piece when people ask where I work) and although it may seem totally random, it’s a part of my story. And, it’s helping me get to where I am going, and becoming who I am.

So here is a journal I picked for you because I know how much you love the ocean. You are freer now than you have ever been to think up and line out amazing stories, write them all down in here. I can just see you now, sitting on a sailboat with Scott and Journey, sailing the world and writing down the stories you are creating for you and Journey. Never give up on your dreams. I can’t wait to hear about them as you line them out.

I love you so much,
