ALTERED: Chapter One

Chapter One

I walk onto the soft grass, stepping over logs or fallen trees. As I’m passing through a bush containing thorns, I feel a sharp pain in my arm. I quickly sit down on a log and grab my sleeve and pull it up. Blood slips down my arm and lands onto the grass below. How I got the cut, I don’t know.

I grab my bag and search for a bandage. I finally find it and wrap it around my cut. After 3 minutes, I get up, grab my bag, and start walking again.

Let me tell you a bit about myself.

My name is Melanie Brown. I am an Altered. Since you don’t know what an Altered is, I’ll tell you the story…

Once upon a time, there was a government. They were doing things when suddenly, a government official came up with an idea to take wolf DNA and mix it with human DNA. So they tried it with a adult human, and guess what? The human succeeded! But sadly, it died a few days later. So, the government tried it on pregnant women, so that when they gave birth, their babies would have 50% human DNA and 50% wolf DNA.

It succeeded. Their babies didn’t die.

But the people didn’t want the government to make their babies different. So the government closed the case and killed their experiments (meaning they killed the babies). But one day, a government official took in a baby girl (me) and raised her as his own. But when the government found out, they were angry. So, he told her to run and to never stop. So I did. I ran. And I never stopped running.  

The End!

So now, the government is searching for me. They will never stop looking until they see me dead.

And in case you’re wondering, no I don’t shape shift into a wolf. I only get glowing orange eyes, superhuman sense of hearing and smell, my strength becomes stronger, I can see in the dark, and I can run faster than most humans.

My thoughts are interrupted when my foot falls into a hole and I slip and fall. I roll downhill and pain shoots up my arm and leg. I finally land into a pond and I try to get up but I sit back down when the pain in my leg starts to literally sting. I sit there in the dirty pond like an idiot. I finally get the courage to get up. When I stand up, I grab my bag and start walking slowly, wincing as pain hits my leg and arm.

After 20 minutes, I hear cars on roads and I start walking towards the sound. I arrive where the sounds are coming from and look at the stores around me. I look down at the clothes that I have and I make a disgusted face.

I need clothes bad!

I go inside a mall and walk around the mall and spot a store and I try on a pair of jeans, shorts, and shirts. After selecting the clothes that I want, I grab my purse and give the cashier the money.

I walk out with bags filled with clothes. The next store is a shoe store, which I find as soon as I walk out of the store. I go inside and try on a pair of Converse. I buy the shoes and walk out the store. I walk up to a lady who works in a book store across the shoe store.

“Hi. Do you know where the restroom is?” I ask her.

“Yeah, just go into that store and you’ll find a sign above that says ‘Restrooms’ ” He says.

“Okay. Thanks” I say and walk towards the store he told me.

After walking inside, I spot the bathroom and I go inside. I open the stall and lock it behind me. I take off my clothes and put on a green and black shirt that I bought socks, jeans, and my new pair of Converse. I walk out of the stall I was in and look at myself in the mirror.

My blonde hair is a tangled mess, there are bags under my eyes, and my nails have a bit of dirt under them. I grab some soap and wash my hands and remove the dirt. I walk out of the bathroom and out the entrance of the mall. I go to a nearby store and buy a toothbrush, some toothpaste and a hairbrush. I go to a fast-food restaurant across the mall where I brush my teeth and hair in the bathroom.

After brushing my hair and my teeth, I look in the mirror once more and see a girl who looked from hideous to beautiful. A tear slips down my cheek as I remember when my father used to say that I was “born beautiful”.

I smile at the memory.
