The religious reformer, Shankaryacharya, emerged with the names of primary holy places of Chardham - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Dwarka and Jagannath Puri. Hindus believe that due to extreme mystical power of this great saint, the four places took a square shape.
Thereafter, the abode of Adi Shankaryacharya in Garhwal Himalayas got popularized by the name Himalayan Chardham. It is a network of four holy destinations in Uttrakhand - Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath.
