My name is Trevor Harrington I am interviewing John Moore, the lead character of Purchased Power. I will be holding this interview at the offices of Dennis Sheehan in Westchester New York.
Trevor: Mr. Moore, just to get some background, where were you born and where do you now live?
John: I was born in Sausalito California, I now reside in Hong Kong.
Trevor: I know you have just been through a terrible ordeal, what brought you to Hong Kong in the first place?
John: I was running from a brutal divorce.
Trevor: One of the other characters is Rebecca. How did you meet her?
John: I sailed one of my own boats to Hong Kong from San Francisco. When I arrived in Hong Kong I was directed to the Aberdeen Yacht Club by the Harbor Master. Rebecca lived on a boat in the slip across from mine.
Trevor: Right! Did you hit it off right away?
John: Yes, as a friend and neighbor.
Trevor: How long did you know her before the trouble started and how did you become so involved?
John: That's a tough question. I had known her for several months. She got into trouble because of her position with the Hong Kong Police and I helped her.
Trevor: After all you have been through, what have you learned?
John: That anyone can be corrupted, the good as well as the bad.
Trevor: That seems a bit skeptical, do you really believe anyone can be corrupted?
John: yes, it's only a matter of price. The price doesn't have to be an amount of money, it can be a needed secret to be kept, the protection of a loved one, to keep one's position, there are a myriad of reasons. These people who control things can use anything to get what they want and will. It's like the old story of a man approaching a woman at a bar and asking "would you sleep with me for five bucks?" The woman immediately says no and slaps him but when he comes back to her in an hour and asks "will you sleep with me for a million dollars?" she thinks about it and the next morning cashes the check.
Trevor: Who do you believe these people are? The ones who put you through this ordeal.?
John: Trevor, I have met these people, up close and personal. They are greedy, they are powerful and they will do whatever it takes for them to achieve their goals. They are businesses, politicians and sometimes governments. Governments use these people to cause events to further their agenda's, that makes them complicit. The businesses are trying to make money, takeover markets and use the governments to do it. We, as law abiding citizens, have no control over this. We are simply pawns to these powerful and greedy entities. In the future, whenever I hear something is done for the common good, it will be suspect. I have heard that over and over again on this journey. I'm sorry, I got off the question, the people who were responsible for the mess I just went through are power brokers, A group of very powerful men who will do just about anything for money and more power.
Trevor: I don't want to get into details but when did you first realize you were in danger?
John: After Rebecca was taken back to the UK for de-briefing, two men came onto my boat one night and tried to kill me. I was lucky because Chong was nearby and saw them sneak aboard, he saved my life. I was astonished to find out these were agents of my government.
Trevor: You mentioned Chong. Who is he?
John: Chong is my chief cook and bottle washer.. (a brief laugh) No seriously, he is an ex-policeman of the Hong Kong police. After meeting him initially, I hired him as kind of a man-Friday. He acted as a driver, language and martial arts teacher, basically a very well connected employee and friend.
Trevor: You said he saved your life, how?
John: Chong has saved my life on several occasions, I would like to leave it at that.
Trevor: Interesting, were there any others that helped you through this?
John: Many, several of them now dead.
Trevor: Do you think I might be able to interview any of them?
John:No, they're dead.
Trevor: Let me rephrase. Of the surviving characters, do you think any of them would be willing to be interviewed.
John, You would have to ask them.
Trevor: Thank you. Will we be seeing any more of you in this type of scenario.?
John: I hope not but I was just informed by Sheehan that it is a possibility.
Trevor: Just one more question. Do you believe that this experience has changed your life?
John: Yes, most definitely. First of all I am not as naive as I was when this started. Secondly I don't know yet if I will be able to go back to my life and build boats.
Trevor: Well Mr. Moore, I would like to thank you for your time and patience during this interview. I will contact the others and hopefully interview them as well. Thank you.
