Rebecca's question is today:
Do you prefer to read stand-alone books, or books in series? Do you stick with a series the whole way through or stop after the first instalment? Are there any particular series you enjoy?
I definitely prefer stand-alone books to series. But now and then I come across series of books as well (like not too long ago
Faye Kellermann's detective stories). Usually I just read the first instalment, as I am convinced that mostly it is the first one only that is worth reading (if it is at all) - the series are getting less and less interesting (running out of steam), just like on TV. There is one exception of course: if the author originally
plans his
one story in several parts (see for instance the great
Bone graphic novel by Jeff Smith or the not-so-great Harry Potter). In this case the storyline, the characters, etc, are all thought over and the author knows in the very beginning where s/he wants to take her/his writing.
