This is a great mystery book by Donna Fletcher Crow. I had never read any of her books before this one. She makes you think to try to figure out who really is the culprit. The details of the setting, clothing, as well as the development of the main personalities in the book are very entertaining.
The story is that of the head of the Rocky Mountain College English Department, Elizabeth, and her colleague, Richard, who is a professor at the same college. They have a friendship, but Richard would like to take the relationship to the next level. Elizabeth has always liked mystery books and has heard about a week-long “whodunnit” retreat. The retreat will be one where everyone dresses in period clothing, which is the 1930s. Richard is not wild about going on the retreat, but agrees to go with Elizabeth.
When they arrive, they settle into their individual rooms and…well, the story takes off from there. All the attendees at the retreat are divided into teams to solve the pretend mystery. Keep your thinking cap on as throughout the story there are clues and descriptions of events, people, etc… in both the fictional mystery as well as the real mystery.
There is intrigue, romance, and faith developed through the story. Elizabeth remembers learning Scripture at her grandmother’s knee, but has since drifted away from a relationship with God. Richard has been through a tragedy in the past, but has stood firm in his faith. Will the relationship between Richard and Elizabeth become more than friends or will she choose the dashing British chap, who pays her a great deal of attention? Who is the guilty party in the retreat mystery? Who is the real-life criminal?
I would give this book 4 stars out of 5. It is easy to read and well worth your time spent honing your detective skills. I look forward to reading more books from this author, and will let you know what I think of her next book.
