This story captures you from the very beginning and is an enticing tale about Rhode Island in the 1960s. The novel is based around three main characters; Alexandra, Jane and Sukie who are witches. Their lives and those of the towns people are disrupted by an unusual individual,
Darryl Van Horne. John Updike does an amazing job of describing each woman’s feelings towards Darryl. The narrative is quite enthralling and as the book continues you feel that each character becomes more real.

The story takes an unexpected twist when Darryl romances each witch. Afterwhich, he marries their friend Jenny (much to each woman’s surprise). Next, the witches become so furious that they put a hyx on Jenny and give her cancer. Using their powers in this way changes each witch and John continues to capture this through his writing. Please note that the movie is much different than the actual novel – you may get a surprise when you view it!
