When people think multiple marriages, they almost always think Elizabeth Taylor. She might have been married many times, but there are others who seem true romantics at heart.
In our favorite list of 'five celebs who remarry' we instead selected stars who have mastered personal struggles to find love again (and again). In fact, these celebs are redeeming because of their flaws. Flaws let us all understand that love is a journey, and not regimented fairy-tale perfection. There are many celebrities who cannot resist the call of getting married a second time - and a third - and a fourth - but these in our list were all chosen because they learned something from each marriage, and perhaps their growth can help us all to improve.
People may judge harshly, but when you think about it, these celebrities must be true romantics at heart. It hurts to get a divorce. It can hurt more when you have tons of money and too much media scrutiny. Still these are our top 5 celebrities who champion remarriage:
Steven Tyler makes this list because he is an amazing music superstar and a very human soul. Also, he gave the world actress Liv Tyler from his relationship with fashion model Bebe Buell. Everybody digs Liv! Liv's mother initial tried to hide the fact that Steven was the true father in order to protect her daughter from Tyler's drug addiction. The drug addiction has been a real problem for Steven Tyler off and on for his entire life (the rock world he lives within is darkly mottled with drug opportunities). Still, he and his first wife lasted NINE years. Cyrinda Foxe and Steven Tyler, married in 1978 divorced in 1987. That union gave the model/actress Mia Tyler. Foxe eventually published "Dream On: Livin' on the Edge With Steven Tyler and Aerosmith", which was a memoir of her life with Tyler. Cyrinda Foxe unfortunately died from brain cancer in 2002.
Steven overcame his drug addiction in the 1980s because then defunct Aerosmith got back together and these heavy rockers did an intervention, and resurected the band from the ashes. Even Joe Perry was supportive of rehab, and he had drug issues of his own. Cyrinda was a woman who did remarkably well in a relationship with so much exposure, drugs and media attention.
Steven didn't like being single because he remarried within a year of his final divorce decree and in 1988 took fashion designer Teresa Barrick as wife. That couple had two children, Chelsea Anna Tallarico and Taj Monroe Tallarico (Tallarico is Steven Tyler's birth last name). This marriage lasted seven years and perhaps fell apart be Tyler became addicted to a prescription drug, although they cited 'personal problems.'
Steven again managed to rehab from his prescription drugs and within a year was dating Erin Brady since 2006. The couple announced their engagement in December 2011.
When you think about his opportunities to remain single, it is truly telling that he seeks love and marriage. Steven Tyler proves that Rockstars can have good hearts.
Four Marriages and a few rejections. You would think with the death threats that Salmon Rushdie would not have time for love - let alone marriage. And how does he convince a new wife to go into hiding with him? I guess women do love the 'dangerous man'.
He was married to his first wife Clarissa Luard from 1976 to 1987 and have a son, Zafar. His second wife was the American novelist Marianne Wiggins from 1988 to 1993. His third wife was Elizabeth West (married 1997 to 2004); they have a son, Milan. In 2004 to 2007, he married the Indian American actress and model Padma Lakshmi, the host of the American reality-television show Top Chef. In 2008 the Bollywood press romantically linked him to the Indian model Riya Sen, but she put him in the 'friend zone by saying, "I think when you are Salman Rushdie, you must get bored with people who always want to talk to you about literature."
Lastly, Salman was jilted by Michelle Barish who offered to return the 7-carat emarald cut diamond ring he presented her.
He made this list because he is such a bundle of issues - and yet still finds marriage interesting.
We love Jerry Lee Lewis music, but his marriageability is a train wreck. And sometimes those he marries are a bit too close to kin for most people. His latest wife is Judith Ann Coghlan Lewis, 62, who was previously married to one of Lewis' cousins, Rusty Brown. They divorced in 2010. Rusty's older sister, Myra Gale Brown, married Lewis in 1957 when she was 13 and was his third wife. That was a bit too young even in the 1960's, and caused a huge uproar (as it should).
Lewis' sixth marriage ended in 2004 when he divorced Kerrie McCarver after 20 years together.
Going back in time his first marriage, to Dorothy Barton, lasted for almost 2 years from 1952 to 1953. Lewis stated "I was 14 when I first got married. My wife was too old for me; she was 17."
His second marriage, to Jane Mitchum, was of dubious validity because it occurred 23 days before his divorce from Barton was final. Sometimes a man in love just can't help being a legal polygamist.
Wife three, Myra Gale Brown in 1957 was a repeat of possible polygamy because his divorce from Jane Mitchum was not yet legal. So Gale and Jerry had to go through a second marriage ceremony. This lasted a long time in Jerry Lee Lewis marriage years and they were divorced in 1970 after 13 years of marriage.
Lewis's fourth marriage was to Jaren Elizabeth Gunn Pate, ended in tragedy as she drowned after 12 years of marriage.
His fifth wife was Shawn Stephens which was also a tragic ending as she overdosed on methadone. It was only three months.
His sixth marriage was to Kerrie McCarver and it lasted over 20 years and ended in divorce in 2004
So Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis, you lived hard, married as much as you found loved, and gave us great music. Much well wishing on your seventh marriage.
Shock! A woman made the mix besides Elizabeth Taylor. Angelina married British Actor Jonny Lee Miller and it was a whirlwind of 9 months. Starting in 1996 and ending in 1997 (though the divorce would take a few more years.) Billy Bob Thorton was next and their strange relationship included all kinds of weirdness. The divorce was finalized in 2003.
However, Angelina is more than just her rather hurried teens and twenties. She took the pain and lessons of those marriages and molded herself into a better person. Her humanitarian values are truly praiseworthy, and she and Brad are obviously very committed to family and love. Such a commitment to reinventing love is a rare feat - and in her world of beauty it would be very difficult. Love is very much about trust, and when a woman is given extraordinary looks and physical beauty it seems man people only want to break a piece away from her soul - like some kind of war trophy.
It is a bit premature to include her marriage to Brad Pitt as it is only presumed to take place later in 2012. But the couple have matured and seem to be very much in love. Good for them both.
Three Marriages and One REALLY salty divorce. At age 71, he gets a bonus nod for marrying, Katie, a woman 30 years younger. They met when she was doing a documentary on Neil and now is one of his managers. Another bonus for using Twitter to make the announcement of the marriage on April 21, 2012.
"Good news coming from sunny LA/ and you're the first I want to tell/Katie and I just got engaged/and I hope you wish us well."
Naturally they live together in his mansion in LA. He was previously married to his high school sweetheart, Jayne Posner which ended in 1969 after six years of marriage. Later that same year he wed Marcia Murphey. This was an expensive divorce because she got 93 million when they divorced in 1995. I don't ever remember her singing backup for Mr. Diamond - but at the second most expensive divorce in Hollywood - you would think she sang tenor with Neil
