Where Do Story Ideas Come From?
I first wish to thank Jan for allowing me to spend the day here on her blog. I also wish to thank her for inventing and organizing this Summer Reading Blog Hop.
There’s an old house I pass every day I drive from my home in the country into Lake City, the nearest city. It sits close to my own house but directly on Highway 90. The house is more of a cottage, actually, and very cute. It’s the sort of cottage I could imagine visiting Grandma at or meeting other ladies for afternoon tea. The cottage is adorable.
But beside the cottage sits a rugged lean-to shed that isn’t quite as adorable. In fact, it scares me. I always study it in passing wondering what’s inside. That’s when my imagination kicks in and I think I know what, or rather who, is inside that lean-to.
I see a pair of very young light blue eyes watching cars pass through slats between the weathered boards. Dark stringy hair, once shiny blonde, surrounds a round, dirty face that was once white as paper. Then, from within the house I hear a male adult bellow. A quavering old woman’s voice yells back. I can’t distinguish what the words are but the intent is obvious. They are arguing about something. The girl’s eyes widen and slide sideways, her gaze falling on the house.
Then I am past the house and my mind returns to driving into town to get my son at school. But those pale blue eyes haunt my memory…
As you can see, the horrors of our world are never far from my mind. It always pains me when something like my vision actually occurs—which is too often these days. This pain is the reason I began writing the Seraphym Wars series. It contains actual news like my scene above, except taken directly from newspapers.
My newest book, Harpies, Book Two will be out soon, we are currently in edits. It is a continuation of the journey for the remaining three Vigorios. Here is a blurb to whet your whistle:
