Wake up America! You OWN the 1 percent …
It never ceases to amaze me how 99% of the people in this world think. Why do people not realize the power that they have. Every major corporation from Pepsi to Apple would be nothing without the consumers who buy their products. The 1% (despite many statements to the contrary) do not run this world … it’s the 99% who have complete and utter control over the 1 percent. You may ask: How is that possible? I read recently that Apple is worth 656 Billion dollars and is slated to hit the 1 Trillion dollar mark by 2015 or so. Now, we all know that Microsoft has monopolized the market ever since shortly after its introduction many years ago. Apple, however, was never able to compete because none of the major computing programs that we all use every day worked well, or at all, with Apple’s laptop and desktop computer software; most people simply preferred the Windows’ operating system. How did Apple get back in the game? They took the lead of a simple video game franchise: Madden NFL. They came out with the iconic IPhone, and then suckered millions of people into buying a new version of the phone every, single, year. Sound familiar? There are little advancements in the software and people are shelling out $199 to $600 so that their phone can talk to them (which is another way for people to draw back from human contact but that is another debate). My point: I believe that Bill Clinton put it best when he mentioned the word "ARITHMETIC" at this year’s democratic national convention. One trillion dollars possibly earned by ONE company … and the United States owes about 17 Trillion dollars right now. Apple could possibly make enough money in the next 10 to 20 years to pay our national debt. Question: How can ONE company (setting aside the idea of the American Dream) make that much money in this day in time?
It’s because YOU (the consumer) is easily influenced by fads and the follow the leader mentality. It’s because YOU buy their product no matter what the cost. Where does the 99% weigh in in all of this? A perfect example of how WE run the world would be my solution to ending the current NFL referee lockout. Turn off your televisions this Sunday. Don’t watch the games, don’t bet on the games, and don’t even watch them on the Internet for ONE, Single, Day. Excluding the season ticket holders (who have paid for their seats in advance) don’t attend this Sunday’s games, anywhere. Let Neilson’s ratings show that only 1,000 or so people watched the games in every state. Let the gambling giants lose millions because no one bet. Let the billionaire owners see a marginal net profit loss … and then see if the power of the people, the power of the 99%, doesn’t get done what negotiations have failed to do. The internet group Anonymous actually had the right idea (although it was extreme) to an extent. What happens when you go to the store and your Visa card won’t work? Most people pay cash or they use another card. Anonymous caused the company to lose millions of dollars in transaction fees in just a few hours. To broaden your sense of my view: Pepsi, Apple, the NFL, Banks, Wall Street, or any company remotely affiliated with earning large sums of money, by selling YOU a product or service, cannot continue to manipulate our system (with tax loopholes as well as buying politicians like Mitt Romney) if YOU stop contributing to their overall financial plan. Just as most celebrities gain fame and fortune by essentially selling themselves to the public, and then they subsequently begin to think that they are better than their fans and mistreat you … so has these corporations. I asked Oprah once (on Twitter): “You have the power to change the world … why haven’t you?” What I meant was: Once you are a billionaire, and you have the power and influence that comes with it, why not run for office and change the way this game is played? Someone like that cannot be bought.
Rachel Maddow said it best in one of her recent ads that I’ve seen where she said, "Your vote CAN’T be bought!" So why are you letting corporate America and the billionaires buy your vote every time you get the new IPhone or you watch a football game with an unqualified ref calling the shots? Why are you voting for politicians whose main concern is sustaining and growing the 1 percent? To all of the 30 million plus people who recently bought an IPhone I say: Look down at your Iphone … turn on your internet browser … and check your bank account. Then, ask yourself: Was sacrificing my children’s future worth the purchase of this device? If your answer is no, you might want to start considering who is really the one giving the 1% all of this power … and maybe, just maybe, you might want to start doing something about it.
